Attended Reserve High School, where he lettered four times in basketball and football and five times in track and field. New Mexico discus champion two times while wining six medals overall at state. Won Reserve High School's Gusty Kiehne award for best football/track athlete. Unofficial New Mexico state javelin record holder. Was all-district in basketball four years and all-district in football there years. Was named first-team all-state in football.
