Application Deadlines

Early Decision I: November 15

If you are sure that Grinnell is your first choice, you may decide to submit a binding application for Early Decision I consideration. Your application must be postmarked by November 15, and you will be sent a decision in mid-December. Again, your application is binding; if you are accepted to Grinnell, you must withdraw any other applications that you have submitted to other institutions.

Early Decision II: January 1

Our second Early Decision option is also binding, but your application must be postmarked by January 1, and a decision letter will be mailed in early February.

Regular Decision: January 15

Applications for Regular Decision must be postmarked by January 15. You will be notified of a decision by early April, and will have until May 1 to respond to an offer of admission.

We encourage students to submit the application requirements early. The Office of Admission will be closed December 23, 2011 - January 1, 2012.

Application Requirements

  1. The Common Application: Grinnell College uses the Common Application exclusively. We strongly encourage electronic submission of the Common Application and we will waive the application fee for students who apply online. 
  2. 2011-2012 Common Application Grinnell College Supplement: This is a short form specific to Grinnell College and is also available through the Common Application. (After choosing Grinnell College as one of your colleges, you will be able to click on the Supplement tab to complete and submit your supplement form.)
  3. SAT or ACT Score Report: Grinnell has no minimum SAT or ACT score requirements. For more information on the SAT and test scheduling, visit www.collegeboard.com. For information on the ACT and test scheduling, visit www.act.org.
  4. Teacher Evaluations (2): Grinnell requires two letters of recommendation from teachers of your choice in core academic subjects. The Common Application Teacher Recommendation forms are preferred.
  5. Recommendation from your secondary school counselor: Grinnell requires one letter of general recommendation from your secondary school counselor. The Secondary School Report is required and should accompany your high school transcript. The Common Application Secondary School Report form is preferred.
  6. High School Transcript: An official copy of your transcript with an original (not photocopied) stamp, signature, or seal.
  7. Interview: An interview is an optional but encouraged part of the admission process. Please note that interviews are evaluative. Home-schooled and Early Admission (not Early Decision) students are required to complete an interview to be considered for admission.
  8. Early Decision Agreement (Early Decision Applicants only): The Early Decision Agreement form should be completed with your guidance counselor. This form is available via the Common Application.
