Matthew Welch '96 Meets the Challenge
I know what you're thinking. Why should alumni give to the Pioneer Fund when the College has a significant endowment? Well, I give to Grinnell every year because I've received so much. In truth, it's more than I could ever pay back. As an applicant, Grinnell offered a scholarship that made it possible for me to attend a top-tier liberal arts school. As a student, Grinnell made it possible for me to travel to Washington, DC for a political rally and to train in Florida with the swim team over winter break. Grinnell connections helped me land my first two jobs. And every day I appreciate the critical thinking, social concern, and leadership skills that Grinnell cultivated in me. The endowment helped to pay for only part of this experience.
Other people's gifts are put into the endowment and those gifts are invested and spent according to their wishes. But every year alumni gifts to the Pioneer Fund pay for experiences earnings from endowed gifts and tuition can not. How could I not give back to Grinnell? Today's students need the same gifts that I-and all Grinnellians-have received.
