The Departments of History and Religious Studies at Grinnell College seek to fill a tenure-track position in Middle Eastern History and Islamic Religious Traditions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level; appointment at the Instructor level (ABD) is also possible. Specialization in the modern period (post-1800) is preferred; specialization in other periods will be considered. This will be a joint appointment in the History and Religious Studies departments beginning in August, 2009. The successful candidate will play a key role in the college's current initiative to develop a broader interdisciplinary curriculum of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The teaching schedule of five courses over two semesters will include introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in the history of the Middle East and Islamic religious traditions. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop courses in area(s) of specialization. Every few years one course will be a Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented toward a special topic).

In letters of application, candidates should discuss their interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an undergraduate liberal arts college that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. They also should discuss what they can contribute to efforts to cultivate a wide diversity of people and perspectives, a core value of Grinnell College. To be assured of full consideration, all application materials should be received by October 15, 2008. Initial interviews will be conducted at the annual meetings of the AAR and the AHA. Send letter of application, CV, and three confidential letters of recommendation to Professor Edmund Gilday, Search Committee, Department of Religious Studies, Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA 50112.
