Grinnell College Alternative Break (GCAB) is a student-run organization that offers students the opportunity to travel as members of a fun, safe, and intentional service community during their Fall and Spring breaks. By living and working in the communities they serve, students develop new perspectives, enhance leadership skills, and participate in educational and hands-on community service projects.
Alternative Break trips are composed entirely of students, without faculty or staff, because we believe students learn and grow the most when serving in an environment in which they have full responsibility for their decisions and actions, and in which students are responsible for creating a community among themselves. Recent AltBreak projects have included building Habitat for Humanity homes for under-served populations in South Dakota, and learning more about sustainable agriculture in partnership with World Hunger Relief, Inc., near Waco, Texas.
We generally field several trips to various locations each break. Interested? Contact the student coordinators or Susan Sanning, community service coordinator.
