Federal Direct Student Loan

Step 1:  FAFSA

A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file with our office. If you have not already done so, complete it at FAFSA on the WEB (Dept. of Education) Grinnell Code: 001868.

Step 2: Master Promissory Note

New students and first-time returning student Direct Loan borrowers should complete the Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) online at the link below. You may electronically sign the MPN using your Federal PIN number.  If you have previously borrowed a Federal Direct Loan you do not need to complete the Master Promissory Note again.

If you cannot complete your Master Promissory Note online, print the MPN at the link below, complete it, and send it to us along with the Federal Direct Loan Request Form.

Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS):

Step 1:  FAFSA

Your student must have the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with our office. If you have not already done so, complete it at FAFSA on the WEB (Dept. of Education) Grinnell Code: 001868.

Step 2:  Request the Loan

Visit StudentLoans.gov.

The parent borrowing will need to:

  1. Sign In
  2. Enter information to sign in
  3. Select 'Request a Direct PLUS Loan'
  4. Select 'Parent PLUS'
  5. Go through the Request Direct PLUS Loan steps.

If you cannot complete the online process, print the Loan Request Form below, complete it, and mail it to the Financial Aid Office.

Step 3: PLUS Counseling

Effective March 29, 2015 PLUS borrowers with adverse credit who decide to pursue a PLUS with an endorser or through an appeal to the Department of Education, will be required to complete PLUS Counseling. The PLUS Counseling must be completed within 30 days and will only be valid for the duration of the credit check.

The parent borrowing will need to:

  1. Sign In
  2. Enter information to sign in
  3. Select ‘Complete Counseling’
  4. Select ‘PLUS Counseling’
  5. Go through the PLUS Counseling steps.

Step 4:  Master Promissory Note (MPN)

Parents borrowing for new students and first-time parent borrowers of returning students should complete the Federal Direct Parent Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) online at the link below. You may electronically sign the MPN using your Federal PIN number. If you previously borrowed a Federal Direct PLUS Loan for the student, you do not need to complete the Master Promissory Note again.
