Peer Connections Pre-Orientation Program (PCPOP Leadership Institute):

Grinnell invites the incoming students of color, first generation and student athletes to participate in a voluntary pre-orientation program to obtain effective learning strategies to maintain student success in a thriving residential college community. The Peer Connections Pre-Orientation Program (PCPOP Leadership Institute) trains upper-class Peer Mentors to work with a select group of incoming first year students as they transition into college life. The intersectionality of identity, culture, community, expression, ability, gender and race are all vital parts of student success at Grinnell College.

Intercultural Engagement provides student mentorship activities, workshops, diversity education and symposiums on topics such as academic success, inclusive excellence, diversity and social justice. The First Year Student Success initiative is designed to streamline the student transformation process and develop a well balanced college experience. Intercultural Engagement collaborates throughout the college community with students, faculty, alumni and the local community to provide a very strong sense of belonging and a serious commitment to a successful liberal arts education.

Welcome! The Office of Intercultural Engagement and Leadership (OIEL) is pleased that you are interested in our Peer Connections Pre-Orientation Program (PCPOP). PCPOP focuses on helping under-represented students successfully transition into the unique academic and social experience available at Grinnell. By offering peer mentors, faculty support, dynamic workshops and a sneak peek at the campus, we seek to ease incoming students into life at Grinnell. At the end of the week, we hope that students will feel empowered to access. More than just a pre-orientation program, PCPOP offers students an opportunity to make friends, mentors, and memories which will remain throughout their collegiate experience.

A crucial aspect of the PCPOP model is our mentor – mentee relationships. Mentors are chosen from a pool of high achieving campus leaders. Mentees are paired with mentors based on shared interests, academic histories, regional similarities and various other factors. Mentors serve as a guide and support system for mentees and not merely tour guides. PCPOP mentors are available to share their experiences and offer candid perspectives on life at Grinnell. The mentor-mentee relationship is very fluid. Though we will encourage and help develop strong, long-lasting relationships – through group activities and check ins – we allow both parties to form the kinds of mentor – mentee relationships which will prove most useful for their needs. PCPOP mentors will be but one of many mentors and resources on Grinnell's campus available to guarantee student success. Throughout this orientation program, we hope to introduce students to but a few of these resources. With that, we eagerly await your arrival and the opportunity to introduce you to this dynamic community.
