Purpose

30 Minutes of Mindfulness is designed to provide students with an opportunity to practice mindfulness in a semi-structured setting.

No experience is needed and no materials or special clothes, seats or mats are required.

Each drop-in session will provide participants with exercises to help deepen their mindful awareness.

4:15–4:45 p.m. in SHACS office (lower level of the Forum)

Why mindfulness?

Research has shown that mindfulness can:

  • help reduce stress,
  • improve emotional regulation,
  • boost the body’s immune system,
  • improve focus, and
  • increase compassion toward self and others, to name a few of the benefits.

How can I be mindful?

There are numerous ways to practice mindfulness, as long as the individual is actively working to keep themselves in the present with an open and accepting mind. For example, mindful eating focuses on the experience of ingesting food where the color, the texture, the taste, the smell, and the process of chewing and swallowing are focused on as they are experienced. Whatever you are doing can be a mindful experience.

Is mindfulness difficult?

It doesn’t require anything other than some time and commitment, whether it be 30 minutes daily or 5 minutes a couple times a week.
