2014 Call for Applications: Staff Service Fellowship in Ghana with Grinnell Prize Winner James Kofi Annan

In appreciation of our staff's valuable contributions to the Grinnell community, and to further provide unique development opportunities for staff, up to two Grinnell staff members, regardless of exempt or non-exempt status, will recieve funding to work with the 2011 prizewinner, James Kofi Annan's non-profit organization Challenging Heights in Ghana. 

The fellowship grant of up to $4,000 will be funded by the Office of the President's Grinnell Prize program. This grant will cover airfare to Accra, most living expenses for approximately a three-week period, and Challenging Heights'€™ volunteer fee. Actual expenses may vary, particularly if the staff member wishes to stay longer than three weeks or if the staff member is proposing an alternative service opportunity. This is not a cash grant; the Prize Office will assist with travel arrangements, including booking the airline ticket, and staff will need to save appropriate receipts for reimbursement. There are various lodging options in Winneba. 

The fellowship opportunities are as follows: 

Outreach programs for local communities 
Under the direction of Challenging Heights' staff, assisting with programs in family planning, education, and issues related to child labor. Typical work may be: drafting invitation letters to government officials to speak at the programs, writing reports on the programs, etc. The programs occur in communities between Accra and Takoradi (coast of Ghana). 

Teachers or Education 
Teaching or tutoring English or other core classes (pre-kindergarten - 7th grade) 

Social Work/Mentoring Program 
Child protection/social work within Challenging Heights' school and rehabilitation shelter; 
emotional therapy through sports and arts; new mentoring program 

Administration 
Performing office duties and administrative work for Challenging Heights'€™ programs 

Agriculture 
Implementing sustainable gardening & farming techniques at the rehabilitation center 

Proposing your own service opportunity utilizing your specific expertise

To apply for the fellowship, staff members should submit a 2-page letter of interest to Melisa Chan at [chanmel] in the Prize Office by Thursday, January 30, 2014. Staff must be employed by the College for at least one year prior to submitting a letter of interest, and continue to be College employed post-fellowship. In their letters, staff should describe their interest in the particular service opportunity or opportunities they wish to have, or propose an alternative service opportunity, and state both personal and professional benefits they hope to gain from the fellowship. While Challenging Heights and the Prize Office will work hard to accommodate the chosen staff's interest, please note that there will need to be flexibility in what volunteer services may most be needed during staff's time in Ghana. Staff should also note how they have been involved with the Prize program, length of service to the College, proposed timeline for travel and supervisor approval to be away from normal work duties during this time, and any other College- sponsored international travel opportunities they have participated or will participate in. The Prize'€™s coordinator and a committee of faculty and staff will review all proposals and select the fellowship recipients by early March.

Grinnellians and Winners

Grinnell Prize winners continue to be involved with the Grinnell community through a variety of ways. Grinnell College students have the opportunity to intern with the winners' organizations, immersing themselves in the work of social justice practitioners and gaining a deeper understanding of the projects the Grinnell Prize supports. In addition to student internships, Grinnell College staff have the opportunity to volunteer with a Prize winner and their organization. By working with winners' organizations and the winners themselves, staff gain insight and understanding of the people and projects the Grinnell Prize supports.
