Trish Fitzgibbons Anderson '80
Ms. Anderson holds a B.A. in English from Grinnell College and a M.A. in Adlerian Counseling & Psychotherapy from the Adler Graduate School. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist in solo private practice, where she also offers family business consulting, mediation services and post-graduate clinical supervision and mentoring. Ms. Anderson holds faculty appointments at Concordia University (St. Paul, Minnesota) and the Adler Graduate School (Richfield, Minnesota.). She also worked in public relations for several years and as a freelance writer. Ms. Anderson is a member of numerous professional associations, and she has served on a variety of professional, community arts and social service boards. Ms. Anderson was a member of the Grinnell Alumni Council from 1986-91, serving as President in 1990-91.
Dr. Robert F. Austin, Jr. '54
Robert F. Austin, MD, is the President of R. J. Austin Consultant, Development and Training in Houston, Texas and has over 46 years experience as a pediatrician. He is the founder of Project Medical Home (PMH) through Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates (TCPA), a subsidiary of Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Austin was instrumental in forging a collaborative partnership between Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates, the Baylor College of Medicine, and Harris County to establish PMH and served for five years as the director of the first center TCPA CULLEN. In addition, through his history and community service, he has identified and created collaborative relationships with several private and non-profit programs to address the broader needs of children and adolescents. Dr. Austin also has an appointment at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Austin received a Bachelor of Arts from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Following three years of military service in the Air Force, he pursued a graduate degree in biology from Boston College. Dr. Austin attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1963. He completed his medical training with a Pediatric Residency at Upstate Medical Center, State University of New York as well as a Fellowship in Hematology from Tufts University, affiliated with Boston City Hospital. Following Pediatric residency and Fellowship in Hematology he established the Pediatric Hematology Section at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse New York. In addition to his professional positions, consultancies, academic appointments and affiliations with professional organizations, Dr. Austin works continuously to serve the community. He has received numerous awards and honors including an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Grinnell College for his efforts as a child advocate in health and education. He is also the recipient of the highly coveted Savvy Award, again awarded for his advocacy for children's health and education. He received the Maconda B. O'Conner award at the annual Children at Risk Luncheon on October 14, 2010, recognizing Dr. Austin's efforts to help shape the healthy outcome of children throughout Houston. Currently, Dr. Austin serves as the Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions. He is on the Board of Directors for The Collaborative for Children and is on the Board of Trustees at Grinnell College.

Ms. Ballantine is a lawyer with EBA Associates in Washington, D.C., and an Adjunct Professor of Russian history at The George Washington University. Earlier she specialized in international trade as Special Counsel at the law firm of Dickstein, Shapiro, Morin, and Oshinsky in Washington, D.C. She has also served as staff attorney at the Central Intelligence Agency and as a staff writer at The Des Moines Register and The Durango (Colorado) Herald. She holds a J.D. from American University and a B.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University. She is a member of the Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa Council of Advisors and a Trustee of the Gardner and Florence Call Cowles Foundation. Ms. Ballantine is Director of McClatchy Newspapers Inc. in Sacramento, California, and a Trustee of the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C.
J. Robert Barr

Mr. Barr graduated from Grinnell in 1957 with a B.A. in history and political science, and received his LL.B. in 1960 from Harvard Law School. Mr. Barr is a retired partner with the law firm of Sidley Austin in Chicago. He was appointed by President Ford to the Commission on Presidential Scholars in 1975, served as the Chair of the Illinois Board of Regents from 1969-77, served as Chair of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission from 1985-2005, and was a member of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, 1971-1977 and 1985-2005. He served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1981-83 and was the head of the Republican Party in Cook County from 1978-85. He has been a Republican delegate to national conventions and legal adviser to the Republican National Committee, and also served on the Illinois Republican State Central Committee. He is actively involved in cultural and civic affairs, including service on the boards of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the Taxpayers' Federation of Illinois and the Evanston History Center. He is a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan.
Richard W. Booth

A 1954 graduate of Grinnell with a B.A. in economics, Mr. Booth has been associated for many years with Lennox International Inc., a leading furnace and air conditioning manufacturer. He held the position of Executive Vice-President and Secretary of the corporation until 1992, when he announced his retirement. He continues his affiliation with Lennox as a member of the Board of Directors and of the Board of Trustees of the Lennox Foundation. Mr. Booth is also a member of the board of directors of Employers Mutual Casualty Company, a Des Moines, Iowa, insurance company. He is a past member of the Grinnell Alumni Association Board of Directors.
David Braman '75
Mr. Braman graduated from Grinnell College in 1975 with a B.A. in biology. He holds an M.B.A. from the University of Denver and is also a Chartered Financial Analyst. He resides in San Francisco, California where he is a senior partner at Pantheon Ventures Inc., a well-known investment management company specializing in private equity fund investment. Mr. Braman is responsible for Pantheon's investment strategy and asset allocation. Mr. Braman is a member of the US Primary and Global Secondary Investment Committees and chairs the Global Infrastructure Investment Committee. Pantheon became a subsidiary of the Russell Investment Group in 2004. Before joining Pantheon, he was a manager at U S WEST Inc., where he developed and managed their private equity investment program. Mr. Braman's spouse, Charlotte Read, graduated from Grinnell College in 1975 with a B.A. in anthropology, and also earned an M.A. from Denver University's School of International Relations.
Nordahl L. Brue '67

Mr. Brue received a J.D. from Washington University in 1970. He is chair of Franklin Foods (dairy manufacturing), vice chair of Green Mountain Power (integrated electric utility), and a board member of Northern New England Energy Corp. (holding company for gas and electric utilities) and New World Angels, a Florida- based angel investment group. In 1983, he founded Bruegger's Bagels, which he grew to a chain of 300 bagel-themed, fast-casual restaurants. His civic involvement includes serving as chair of Vermont Public Radio, Vermont Governor's Councils of Economic Advisers, and of Environmental Advisors and chairing the Board of Trustees at Grinnell College, and serving as a member of the National Council of Washington University School of Law.
Carolyn Swartz Bucksbaum '51

A 1951 Grinnell graduate with a B.A. in English and journalism, Ms. Bucksbaum was a founding member of Friends of Educational Broadcasting in Iowa and chair of the Iowa Center for the Book. Prominently engaged in cultural and civic affairs, She served as chair the board of the Des Moines Symphony, the Scott County (Iowa) League of Women Voters, the Aspen Music Festival and vice-chair of the League of Women Voters of Iowa, the United Jewish Appeal in Des Moines, the National Public Radio Foundation, and as a board member of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the Des Moines Art Center, the Des Moines Register, and a number of other organizations. She currently serves on the board of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Museum of Arts and Design and is a fellow of the Aspen Institute. Mrs. Bucksbaum's long-time membership on the Grinnell Board of Trustees included service as chair. In 2012 she was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by Grinnell College.She pursues strong interests in the outdoors in Aspen, Colorado, where she and her husband Matthew have resided part-time for approximately fifty years. Matthew Bucksbaum co-founded General Growth Properties with his brother Martin, a firm that became the second largest shopping center developer in the United States.
Robert A. Burnett

Until his retirement, Mr. Burnett was President, CEO, and Board Chair of the Meredith Corporation, a publishing and media firm headquartered in Des Moines. Mr. Burnett has served on the board of directors of several American corporations. In addition, he has participated in major civic, philanthropic, educational, and cultural activities as a board member or officer for organizations such as The Edmundson Art Foundation, Des Moines Art Center, Business-Higher Education Forum, Business Enterprise Trust, and the American Council on Education. He also served as a board member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. His service to Grinnell has included terms as Chair of the Board of Trustees.
John F. Egan '57

A native Iowan, John Egan graduated from Grinnell in 1957 with a BA degree in physics (honors), a USAF commission and later, from Northwestern University, received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering. Interested in high technology enterprises, he has held diverse technical and management positions, in both the public and private sector, engaged in defense, aerospace, electronics and information systems. After active duty, he spent nine years in technology management with Department of Defense, and serving 25 years in various roles with the Lockheed Martin Corporation, he retired as a senior corporate officer/vice-president - corporate development. At home in New Hampshire, he is an industry consultant, serves on US government sponsored boards and panels dealing with national security affairs, and is a trustee of local, non-profit educational and charitable institutions. His wife, Anne Patterson '57 (music), remains active as a violinist, and their two married sons, John Jr.'84 , James, and their families live nearby.
Vernon E. Faulconer '61

Mr. Faulconer is a member of the Grinnell class of 1961 and President of Vernon E. Faulconer Inc., an independent oil and gas production firm in Tyler, Texas. He is involved in Tyler Junior College, with particular interest in the Faulconer Academic Incentive Award for Minority Students. Since 1998, Mr. Faulconer has been a board member of the Dallas Museum of Art. Grinnell College awarded him an honorary degree in 2003.
Laura M. Ferguson '90
A Grinnell native, Dr. Ferguson graduated from Grinnell College with a degree in studio art in 1990. In 1995 she received her M.D. from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. She completed a family medicine residency at North Iowa Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, in 1998. She served as Chief Resident during her third year there. After graduation from residency, Laura joined her father, David Ferguson, M.D., in practice in Grinnell. She served as President of the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Medical Staff from 2001-03 and currently sits on the State of Iowa Prenatal Advisory Panel.
Patricia Jipp Finkelman '80

Raised in Vermont and Pittsburgh, Ms. Finkelman graduated from Grinnell in 1980 with a B.A. in economics. After several years as a Budget and Policy Analyst with the Massachusetts Medicaid program, she received a master's degree in public and private management from the Yale University School of Management in 1987. A former health care policy and reimbursement consultant, Ms. Finkelman is currently an active community volunteer in Columbus, Ohio. She has worked with a number of local organizations, including the Columbus Junior Theatre, the March of Dimes, Action for Children, and St. Joseph Montessori School. She was a member of the Grinnell College Alumni Council from 1991-98, serving as President in 1997-98.
Shelley Floyd '72

Ms. Floyd is the Technical Assistant to the Chairman of Intel Corporation. Founded by Grinnell graduate Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore in 1968, Intel is today the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker. During her tenure at Intel, Ms. Floyd has also worked in the office of the Chief Financial Officer and as Director of Investor Relations. Before joining Intel, Ms. Floyd was an investment banker specializing in corporate finance for technology companies. Ms. Floyd was a member of the Grinnell College Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1994. She grew up in Oklahoma and currently lives in California. She has a BA from Grinnell College, an MS from the University of London, and an MBA from Stanford University.
Harold W. Fuson, Jr. '67
Hal retired after more than four decades as a journalist, teacher and news executive, beginning as business manager and editor of the Grinnell Scarlet & Black and ending as executive vice president and chief operating officer of a Southern California newspaper company. Along the way, he taught journalism at four colleges and provided legal advice to newspapers ranging from the Los Angeles Times to the Galesburg Register-Mail. A political science major in the Grinnell class of 1967, Hal also earned an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University and a J.D. from Cleveland State University. He and his wife, Pam Crist Fuson '68 live in Encinitas, California. Among their Grinnell connections are son, John Fuson '93, and daughter-in-law, Amy Henderson, '94. Hal is the recipient of a Grinnell Alumni Award and has served the College in a variety of volunteer capacities. Hal's book, Telling It All: A Legal Guide to the Exercise of Free Speech, was described by Publishers Weekly as “an easy-to-read handbook on how to avoid the legal pitfalls that can accompany free expression.” His work in expanding and protecting First Amendment rights has been recognized nationally by the Media Law Resource Center and by state associations in California and Illinois. He chairs the board of San Diego’s Tony-winning Old Globe Theatre and serves as a director of The Copley Press, CNPA Services (a state newspaper association), The First Amendment Coalition and The Center for the Image.
Ronald T. Gault '62

Mr. Gault is a 1962 graduate of Grinnell with a B.A. in political science. He has a master's degree in political science administration from the University of Michigan. He is a Managing Director at J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. in South Africa. A former member of the Board of Higher Education of New York, he has been involved in minority advancement programs and has contributed advice and counsel to the College in this regard. He supports efforts in South Africa to further post-apartheid economic development.
Atul Gupta '88
Atul Gupta graduated from Grinnell College in 1988 with a double major in Physics and Economics and a concentration in Computer Science. As a student, he was active in the International Student Organization, serving as its president in his second year, and also served as a Student Advisor and Resident Hall Assistant. Atul started his career as a Research Analyst on a two-person team responsible for identifying technology options that would help Principal Financial Group, a $360 billion global financial services firm, gain a competitive advantage. He became the Director of International Systems and was responsible for all overseas Information Technology operations of PFG, consisting of multiple companies located in 9 countries. In 1991, he founded Advanced Technologies Group, Inc. to continue his interest in researching technology and identifying innovative ways to help organizations benefit from it. ATG was ranked among the 500 fastest growing private US companies by Inc. 500 in 2001, 2002 and 2003.. For the last few years, ATG has focused exclusively on developing and implementing solutions that dramatically improve the effectiveness of large judicial agencies such as U.S. Departments of Justice and State Correctional agencies. ATG systems, considered the gold-standard for managing operations of such agencies, are designed to manage the entire continuum of correctional services and provide very significant efficiency gains. Atul was a founding member of the Technology Association of Iowa and focused his energies on creating opportunities to enable Iowa companies to better network with each other. He has served as a board member of ISU’s Iowa Value Fund, which provides funding to projects that create innovative technology and generate high-tech jobs in Iowa. In 2009, he was the recipient of Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Atul is married to Sherry Davis Gupta ’88, and they have three children: Yash, Shabana, and Nitin. Originally from India, Atul applied to Grinnell College after reading about its philosophy to enable students to follow their interests. He selected Grinnell College because the College’s responses to questions during the application process exemplified the thoughtfulness and dedication of Grinnell faculty and staff to ensure student success.
I. Craig Henderson '63
Dr. Henderson is a nationally known expert on cancer, particularly breast cancer. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications; has received numerous professional awards, including a Fulbright Fellowship; and has appeared as an oncology expert on several network television programs. An Iowa native, Dr. Henderson received a degree from Grinnell College in 1963 with a major in history. He went on to graduate with an M.D. from Columbia University in New York in 1970. His career in medicine has included positions at Presbyterian Hospital in New York, the National Institute of Health, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and the University of California-San Francisco Mt. Zion Medical Center. He was on the Harvard faculty for 18 years, and while there he built one of the first multidisciplinary breast clinics in the country. At UCSF he served as Professor of Medicine, Associate Director of the Clinical Cancer Center, and Chief of Medical Oncology. In 1992, he established the Bay Area Breast Cancer Translational Research Program, which is funded by a National Cancer Institute Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant. For the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, he chaired the Committee on Essential Drugs and was a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Cancer. In 1995, he became CEO and Chair of SEQUUS Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company that developed a new drug delivery system and produced a new, highly successful anticancer drug. In 1999, SEQUUS was acquired by ALZA Corporation. Dr. Henderson served on the ALZA board until it merged with Johnson and Johnson in 2001. In 2001 he worked with a partner in New York City to found a new biotechnology company, Access Oncology Inc., which was merged with Keryx Biopharmaceuticals in 2004. Dr. Henderson continued as president of Keryx until 2008. He continues as an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at UCSF, where he sees patients and participates in the leadership of the SPORE program. His ties with Grinnell College have remained steadfast over the years. Two of his children graduated from the College; he received the Alumni Award in 1993 and an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1994; and he has been a valued volunteer for several alumni and career development programs.
Susan Henken-Thielen ’80
Serving as the 2014–15 Grinnell College Alumni Council president, Henken-Thielen is an ex-officio Trustee. She has served on the council since 2009 and as a Grinnell Regional Admission Support Program (GRASP) volunteer since graduating. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa, earning a bachelor’s with honors in psychology from Grinnell. She completed her M.B.A. at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, with concentrations in marketing, strategy, and industrial relations. She has led successful new initiatives in the education, health care, food industries, and medical device fields, including leadership roles with Pearson VUE, Cigna, and Novartis.
Henken-Thielen is an active volunteer for educational, environmental, and community organizations. She is board vice-president of Minnesota Lakes and Rivers Advocates.
Steve Holtze '68
Mr. Holtze is chairman and majority owner of the Magnolia Hotel Company, a hotel development and management company with properties in historic buildings in downtown Denver, Dallas, Houston and Omaha. Grinnell College awarded him a B.A. in physics in 1968, and Columbia University awarded him a B.S. in civil engineering in 1969 and a M.S. in civil engineering in 1970. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honorary fraternity. He is married to Grinnell alumna Elizabeth Alexander Holtze '68, Ph.D., a professor emeritus of English at a Metropolitan State College of Denver. They have three grown children and three grandchildren. Mr. Holtze enjoys his business immensely, but also loves travel and fishing. He is currently also serving on the Colorado Symphony Association Board of Trustees.
Kihwan Kim '57
Dr. Kihwan Kim's distinguished career bridges academia, public service and the business world. Following his graduation from Grinnell College in 1957, Kim earned an MA in history from Yale, and a PhD in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. Before his return to the Republic of Korea in 1976, Kim taught economics at a number of universities in the U.S., including the University of California, Berkeley. Since his return to Korea, he has held many important positions in government. He was Vice Minister of Trade and Industry, Chief Economic Policy Coordinator and Trade Negotiator, and Chief Delegate to the North-South Inter-Korea Economic Talks. In the late 1980s he was a consultant to the World Bank and the OECD. In the early 1990's, Kim returned briefly to the academic world, serving as a visiting scholar at the University of Tokyo and a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley. For most of the 1990s, he was a Senior Advisor at Kim and Chang, the largest and most prestigious law and management-consulting firm in Korea. During the1997-98 Asian financial crisis he was called into government service again to serve as Ambassador-at- Large for Economic Affairs. In this capacity he played key roles in securing timely assistance from the international community to help overcome Korea's crisis. From 1999 to 2002, Kim served as chairman and CEO of Media Valley, Inc., a private and public sector joint initiative created to accelerate the development of information-technology industries in Korea. From 1999 to 2008 he was an International Advisor to Goldman Sachs, Asia and from 2003 to 2005 International Chair of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council. Currently he is Chair of The Seoul Financial Forum and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Korea Development Institute. In May 2000, Kim received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Grinnell College.
Clinton D. Korver '89
Dr. Korver graduated from Grinnell in 1989 with a B.A. with honors in mathematics. He also holds an MS and PhD from Stanford University in Management Sciences and Engineering. Dr. Korver is a partner and co-founder at Ulu Ventures, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm investing in early-stage information technology companies. He is also a Kauffman Fellow, co-founder and co-president of Stanford Angels & Entrepreneurs, and a venture partner at Crescendo Ventures. Prior to venture investing, Dr. Korver founded and led Outcome Software, DecisionStreet, The Decision Company, and Decision Quality International, all of which helped individuals or organizations make better decisions through software, consulting, or training. Clint regularly guest lectures at Stanford on entrepreneurship, decision-making, and ethics. He has taught ethical decision-making at both Stanford and Grinnell College, and co-authored Ethics for the Real World (Harvard Business Press 2008).
Ms. Kwan is currently Chief Investment Officer of SimplySmart Asset Management, a firm she co-founded in 2010 to provide individual investors with smart, straightforward, and accountable global investment solutions at low cost. Prior to founding SimplySmart, she served as Principal and Chief Investment Officer for Structural Wealth, a financial services firm offering wealth management services to high net worth individuals. She was also Vice President of Portfolio Management at Financial Engines, where she oversaw the management of $14B in assets spanning over 200,000 individual accounts. Her financial services experience also includes portfolio management positions at Charles Schwab Investment Management, where she was director of equity quantitative research, and at the Boston Company, where she managed over $500 million in institutional fixed-income assets. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst, and received her Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University and her B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Brown University.
Todd C. Linden
Todd Linden is president and CEO of Grinnell Regional Medical Center, a 49 bed, private non-profit hospital in Grinnell, Iowa. Linden received his Master of Arts degree in Health Administration in 1987 and a Bachelor of Arts degree 1985, both from the University of Iowa. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He was elected to the Grinnell College board in 2000 and prior to that was active with the College’s Town and Gown Campaign activities. During his tenure, Grinnell Regional has tripled its medical staff; created a fitness and rehab center; added a 36,000 square foot medical office building; developed an integrated medicine program; constructed a three-million dollar rural medical mall in an adjacent county; built three new community outreach clinics; and completed a 40 million dollar comprehensive facilities improvement plan [including a four million dollar (1988) and an eight million dollar (2003) community capital campaign]. Since coming to Grinnell in 1994, Linden has received numerous honors including the University of Iowa’s Outstanding Alumni Award, the Iowa Hospital Association’s Excellence in Leadership Award, ACHE’s Iowa Regent’s Award, and Health Forum’s International Emerging Leader in Healthcare Award. Linden is a frequent speaker at national conferences and state hospital associations. He has had the opportunity to testify in the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and a special teleconference with the President Bill Clinton on health care issues. Linden served on the American Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2005; currently serves on the Health Forum board; is past-chair of both the Iowa Hospital Association and Health Enterprises of Iowa; serves on the Grinnell College board of trustees, the University of Iowa College of Public Health advisory board and National Rural Advisory Committee for the US Department of Health and Human Services. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Iowa, as well as a regular faculty for the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has been active at the state level through appointments made by Iowa’s Governor, including chair of the Iowa Telemedicine Advisory Council, Locally, Linden serves or has served on the boards of: Grinnell Chamber of Commerce, Poweshiek Iowa Development, Waterford Group, Imagine Grinnell, Grinnell Renaissance (past-chair) and the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation.
Caroline H. Little '81

Ms. Little graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University with a degree in English, after attending Grinnell for two years, where she was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a second-year student. She received a J.D., with honors, from New York University School of Law in 1986 and clerked with Waller, Lansden, Dortch, & Davis; Teitelbaum & Hiller; Crowell & Moring; and the U.S. Attorney's Office Eastern District of New York. Most recently, she was Chief Executive Officer, Guardian News and Media, North America. She previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, and she earlier served as Chief Operating Officer and previous to that role, as General Counsel for Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive and Deputy General Counsel for U.S. News & World Report. Ms. Little served as a member of the Board of Governors of District of Columbia Bar. She serves on the DC Advisory Board for the Posse Foundation, is a board member of Education Week and the National Literacy Foundation and is a member of the Young President's Organization.

Mr. Little is a 1953 graduate of Grinnell with a B.A. in history. He also holds a law degree from Harvard and a master's degree in law from Georgetown University. He is retired Senior Counsel with the Washington, D.C., law firm of Shaw, Pittman, Potts, and Trowbridge. Mr. Little served as Chair of the Grinnell College Board of Trustees and as the College's National Annual Fund Chair in 1978-79. He currently lives in San Francisco, CA.
James H. Lowry '61

James H. Lowry, Senior Advisor to The Boston Consulting Group, is a nationally recognized workforce and supplier diversity expert and pioneer. Previously a Senior Vice President at BCG and Global Diversity Director, Jim led the firm’s workforce diversity, ethnic marketing and minority business development consulting practice. Prior to joining BCG, Lowry had his own firm, James H. Lowry & Associates (JHLA), which was established in 1975. In 1978, JHLA prepared the first major study on minority business enterprise development for The Department of Commerce entitled, New Strategy for Minority Business. In 2005, Lowry authored a new study entitled Realizing the New Agenda for Minority Business Development sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation, in conjunction with the Billion Dollar Roundtable. In 2009, Lowry authored a study on Capital Formation for the National Association of Investment Companies (NAIC). Over the years, Lowry has designed and implemented state of the art supplier diversity programs in the public sector for the cities of Louisville, Atlanta, and Chicago; and at the Federal level, for the Small Business Administration, the Department of Labor, and Department of Defense; within the private sector, for Burger King, AT&T, American Express, Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Toyota and Ford Motor Company. Lowry began his career in various positions with the U.S. Peace Corps including Associate Director in Lima, Peru. He later was Assistant to the President of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation before becoming the first African American at McKinsey & Company. He rose to Senior Associate for McKinsey & Company, serving in London, New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. His educational background includes an undergraduate degree in political science from Grinnell College and a master’s degree in public international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. He attended the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School and was elected president of his class. Lowry is the Academic Advisor for the Kellogg Advanced Management Education Program and Adjunct Professor at the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He, also, serves on Kellogg’s Advisory Board. He chairs the Durban, South Africa/Chicago Sister Cities Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Howard University School of Business and serves as Chairman of the Howard University Entrepreneurship Center. He, also, chairs the RLJ Equity Fund and is a member of the Toyota Diversity Advisory Board. Lowry is the former Chairman of the Chicago Public Library Board, and former member of the Kraft Multicultural Council, the Chicago Council of Foreign Relations and Harvard Business School Visiting Committee. He co-hosted the groundbreaking television shows Inside Bedford Stuyvesant in 1966 and MBR: THE MINORITY BUSINESS REPORT in 1985. In 2009, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Minority Supplier Development Council. He was honored in the inaugural class of the Minority Business Enterprise Hall of Fame in 2005. He was awarded an honorary Doctors of Laws degree in 2009 from his alma mater, Grinnell College.
Tobi Klein Marcus ’87
A management consultant, Marcus focuses on nonprofit organizations and philanthropic advising. From 2007 to 2012, she held several leadership roles at the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the largest grant maker to nonprofits on California’s central coast with over $150 million in charitable assets.
Previously, Marcus worked as a strategy consultant to a variety of nonprofit organizations. She also worked for Boston Consulting Group, an international strategic planning firm serving Fortune 500 clients.
Marcus has served in a number of leadership roles in the nonprofit community. She is currently a board member of United Way Monterey County and is active with the Rotary Club of Salinas.
She holds a bachelor’s with a major in sociology from Grinnell College. She earned her master’s from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Bristol.
Paul McCulley '79
Mr. McCulley holds a B.A. in Economics, with honors, from Grinnell College, and an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business, with Beta Gamma Sigma honors and a triple major in Finance, Business Economics, and Money and Financial Markets. Mr. McCulley was a Partner at PIMCO, the world's largest and most esteemed fixed income investment management company, where he was a member of the investment committee, a generalist portfolio manager, and head of the money market and funding desk. Paul also led PIMCO's Cyclical Economic Forum and was author of the monthly research publication Global Central Bank Focus, featured on www.pimco.com. Mr. McCulley joined PIMCO in 1999, previously serving as Chief Economist for the Americas for UBS Warburg. During 1996-98, he was named to six seats on the Institutional Investor All-America Fixed Income Research team. In 2008, Paul was appointed a member of the U.S. Treasury's Borrowing Advisory Committee, established by Congress and reporting to the U.S. Treasury Secretary. Mr. McCulley hails originally from Verona, Virginia, a small town outside of Staunton, the son of the Reverend and Mrs. Everett C. McCulley. According to Mr. McCulley, when he came to Grinnell, he was considered high economic need, and Grinnell provided assistance fully consistent with its need-blind philosophy. While at Grinnell, he lettered in cross country and was the student manager of the Quad dining room. Mr. McCulley is the founder and benefactor of the Morgan Le Fay Dreams Foundation, dedicated to the needs of children.
Susan Holden McCurry '71
Susan Holden McCurry graduated from Grinnell College in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. From 1971 to 1975 she held several positions as director of pre-schools and day care centers while she continued her education in Early Childhood Development and Administration in San Diego, California. From 1976 to 1977 she managed a retail business in Iowa. In 1978, she joined the family business, Holden's Foundation Seeds, Inc., headquartered in Williamsburg, Iowa. Ms. Holden McCurry served as Chief Financial Officer for Holden as well as for Hawaiian Research, Ltd., in Molokai, Hawaii. Both companies specialized in seed research and development and were founded by Roland Holden, who passed away in 1995. She remained involved in the company until 1997, when Holden's Foundation Seeds was sold to Monsanto. Hawaiian Research, Ltd. was also sold to Monsanto in 2000. From 1997-2002, she served as a consultant to Monsanto. Her current activities include serving as a board member for the Holden Family Foundation, Highland Ridge Retirement Community, and the University of Iowa Cancer Advocacy Board. She is married to David McCurry and they have four children. Ms.Holden McCurry resides in Naples, Florida and in Iowa City, Iowa.
George Moose ’66
A career member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Moose attained the rank of career ambassador. He was U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Benin, 1983–1986, and to the Republic of Senegal, 1988–1991.
From 1991 to 1992, he served as U.S. alternate representative to the United Nations Security Council. In 1993, he was appointed assistant secretary of state for African affairs, a position he occupied until 1997. From 1998 to 2001, he was U.S. permanent representative to the European office of the United Nations in Geneva.
Ambassador Moose is adjunct professor of practice at the Elliot School of International Affairs, George Washington University. He is vice chair of the U.S. Institute of Peace board of directors.
Moose holds a bachelor’s in American studies from Grinnell, which also awarded him an honorary doctorate of laws.
Randall C. Morgan, Jr. '65

Dr. Morgan received a B.A. degree in chemistry from Grinnell in 1965 and an M.D. degree from Howard University Medical School. In 2001, he received an M.B.A. from the University of South Florida. An orthopedic surgeon, he is in private practice in Sarasota, Florida. He also holds teaching appointments at the Indiana Northwest Center for Medical Education and at the Northwestern University Medical School. A former Chief of Surgery and of Rehabilitation Medicine at Methodist Hospital in Gary, Indiana, Dr. Morgan is a member of the Committee on Resolutions of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, among several other professional and civic affiliations. He also served as Speaker of the House of Delegates and as President of the National Medical Association. Holder of an honorary doctorate from Grinnell, he has been a member of the President's Committee for a Stronger Minority Presence, the Alumni Board, and other college bodies.
Robert C. Musser '62

Mr. Musser grew up in Boone, Iowa and received a B.A. in physics from Grinnell in 1962. He played basketball and tennis at Grinnell and was co-Captain of the basketball team his senior year. He then earned an M.S. from the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management in 1964. He spent two years in Kaduna, Nigeria on the MIT Fellows in Africa program where he worked on financial issues. He joined Mobil Corporation where he held a number of financial jobs including the Treasurer of Mobil Europe and Treasurer of the U. S. Division. He then had a number of Corporate jobs including the Chief Information Officer for Mobil from 1980-1985. He retired in 1996 after serving 9 years as controller of Mobil Corp. He now serves on the board of governors for the Church Schools of Virginia in Richmond, VA and is involved with environmental groups.
Gregg R. Narber '68
Mr. Narber's interest in political and foreign affairs was evident during his years at Grinnell College, where he participated in men's government, student council, Young Democrats, and the radio station while earning a B.A. in political science and Latin American studies in 1968. He and his family hosted several foreign students from Europe, Turkey, Brazil, and Bolivia for one year each under the AFS program. He went on to receive an M.A. in political science and a law degree from Washington University at St. Louis in 1971. He has worked for the Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, where he was Senior Vice President and General Counsel, and served a three-year assignment as Chief Operating Officer of BrasilPrev, a Principal Financial Group joint venture in São Paulo, Brazil. He also served as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association; the State of Iowa Human Services Council, responsible for policy and budgets of all state human services activities; the Iowa Attorney General's Task Force on Alternative Dispute Resolution; and the Acquisitions Committee and Board of Trustees of the Des Moines Art Center, serving as President of that board from 1997-99. He has also served on the boards of the Des Moines Symphony and Metro Arts Council in Des Moines. During his time in Brazil, he was involved in researching and writing about rural messianic movements, work honored by the Academy of Arts and Letters of the State of Bahia. Gregg completed an M.A. in History and his Ph.D. in 2007 in History from the University of Iowa in and most recently taught for four years as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
Patricia Meyer Papper '50

A 1950 Grinnell graduate with a B.A. in economics and business, Ms. Papper is an ardent supporter of cultural, humanistic, and educational activities. She is a Trustee and past President of the Miami Art Museum. She is a board member of the Aspen Music Festival and School and a board member of the National Public Radio Foundation. Ms. Papper is a Trustee of the internationally acclaimed New World Symphony, a board member of the Rape Treatment Center at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, and the founding board member of women known as 50 over 50, which is dedicated to replacing lost government funding for the arts in the private sector. Ms. Papper and her late husband, Dr. Emanuel Papper, endowed the College's Sidney Meyer Professorship in International Economics, a chair established in memory of Ms. Papper's father.
John Roy Price, Jr. '60

Mr. Price is a 1960 Grinnell graduate with a B.A. in history. Upon graduation from Grinnell, he studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and later received a law degree from Harvard Law School. He was the president and CEO of Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh, and a retired managing director of Chase Manhattan Bank, New York. At Chase, he managed the mortgage banking and consumer finance businesses; did investment banking, and later was in charge of government relations worldwide. He is now managing partner of Infrastructure Advisory Partners. Among other major posts, Mr. Price was special assistant to President Nixon from 1969-1971. A founder and later board chair of the Ripon Society, he chaired the advisory committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors on Downtown Development. He served as chair and president of Americans for Oxford, and as president of the Bankers Association for Foreign Trade.
Ronald B.H. Sandler '62

A 1962 Grinnell graduate with a double major in chemistry and zoology, Dr. Sandler participated in football and basketball as an undergraduate. He recently retired as an orthopedic surgeon from Mezona Orthopedic Professional Association. Former President of the Medical Staff of Mesa Lutheran Hospital and past Chair of the Department of Surgery, Dr. Sandler and his wife Rita have made over 30 trips to countries such as Brazil, Peru, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Pakistan as a volunteer medical team operating primarily on congenital deformities in children. Dr. Sandler serves as a Trustee for Sunshine Acres Children's Home in Mesa, Arizona, and is a member of the advisory board for Banner Health of Arizona. In 1996, he was named Mesa's Man of the Year for his humanitarian efforts at home and abroad.
Penny Bender Sebring '64

Dr. Sebring is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Chicago and Co-director of the Consortium on the Chicago School Research, an organization dedicated to monitoring and assessing Chicago's school reform effort. She is an author of Charting Chicago School Reform: Democratic Localism as a Lever for Change (Westview Press, 1998). Dr. Sebring has directed federally funded longitudinal studies of middle- and high-school students, and she was a Peace Corps volunteer and high school teacher. She has published articles on a variety of topics, including students' course-taking patterns in high school, urban education, school leadership, and the utilization of research and evaluation results. She received a B.A. degree in sociology from Grinnell in 1964, an M.Ed. from Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. in education and policy studies from Northwestern University. She serves on the board of the McGaw YMCA, Evanston, Illinois, and the Social Sciences Visiting Committee, University of Chicago.
Karen Shaff is the executive vice president and general counsel for Principal Financial Group, Inc. She is responsible for the Law and Government Relations departments of the Principal. Principal is a more than $318.8 billion, Fortune 500 insurance and financial services organization based in Des Moines, Iowa. Before joining Principal in 1982, Shaff was an associate with the law firm of Austin and Gaudineer in Des Moines from July 1979 through February 1982. Shaff holds a law degree from Drake University Law School. Shaff obtained her B.A. from Northwestern University in Political Science. Shaff is a board member and Immediate Past President of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, a member of the American, Iowa State and Polk County Bar Associations, the Association of Corporate Counsel and a past member of the Iowa State Bar Association Committee on Professional Ethics and Conduct (1984-1989) and the Iowa State Bar Association Board of Governors (1989-1995). She is a director of GuideOne Mutual Insurance Company, GuideOne Specialty Mutual Insurance Company and Sargasso Mutual Insurance Company, Ltd. Karen is also chair of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa's Advisory Council and past President of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel.
M. Anne Spence '66
Dr. Spence held academic positions in the University of California system from 1970 until 2004. She is currently Professor Emerita in the Department of Pediatrics, UC Irvine. Among her various positions, she served as Associate Dean in the Graduate Division at UCLA and Vice Chancellor of Academic Programs at the University of California, Irvine from 1992-94. She was the first to hold this position. According to the Los Angeles Times, the position was created in 1992 to help shape student affairs during lean budget years. Dr Spence was active in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as medical school. Her research in human genetics focused on birth defects including both neurological, e.g., autism, and physical, e.g., cleft lip and palate. She employed mathematical models and statistical approaches via complex computer algorithms for the analysis of family data and applications for improved recurrence risks for genetic counseling. Dr. Spence earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Grinnell in 1966. After earning her Ph.D. Human Genetics from the University of Hawaii in 1969, she received the NIH fellowship for post-doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina. In 1979, Dr. Spence received the Woman of Science Award at UCLA. She was a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the Genetics Society of America, and the Behavioral Genetics Association. Grinnell College awarded her an honorary degree in 1999 and an alumni award in 1990. Dr. Spence served on various editorial boards including the American Journal of Human Genetics, Journal of Genetic Epidemiology, and the Alzheimer's Disease and Associated Disorders Journal. She served on the board of directors for the American Board of Medical Genetics and was President of that Board when it was recognized as a medical subspecialty by ACGME. She has won numerous awards, including the National Standard Oil Foundation Merit Scholarship and the Guttmann Foundation Scholarship. She was named to the 1976 and subsequent editions of American Men and Women of Science. In2001, she was awarded the annual Leadership Award by The International Genetic Epidemiology Society.
Joel Spiegel '78
Joel Spiegel received a B.A. in Biology from Grinnell. Before his retirement, Joel was a Vice President of Amazon.com. During his tenure there he was responsible for all of the company's website technology development and launched Amazon.com's marketplace businesses. Prior to joining Amazon.com, he held a variety of management and software development positions at Microsoft, Apple Computer, Hewlett Packard and VisiCorp. Joel spent a year as a VISTA volunteer working with the Northern Cheyenne Tribe in Lame Deer, MT. He is a named inventor on over two dozen U.S. patents. In addition to being a Grinnell College Trustee, he serves on the board of directors of evo (evo.com), a Seattle-based retailer of active lifestyle gear, apparel, and accessories.
Donald M. Stewart '59

On July 1, 2004, Donald M. Stewart retired from the position of Chief Executive Officer of The Chicago Community Trust, a post he held since June 2000. He retained the title of President until January 1, 2005. He was a Visiting Professor at The University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy Studies having completed a sabbatical from the Trust at the end of June 2005. Prior to joining the Trust, Stewart spent an academic year at the Carnegie Corporation in New York City, where he served as Senior Program Officer of the Education Division and Special Advisor to the President. He was responsible for grant making in higher education. For 12 and one half years, Stewart served as President and Chief Executive Officer of The College Board and as Adjunct Lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government for three years. Stewart is the former president of Spelman College, in Atlanta where he served for 10 years. He also served as an associate dean and assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and as a staff member of the Overseas Development Division of the Ford Foundation with assignments in Nigeria, Egypt, and Tunisia. A former member of the Mayo Clinic and Teachers College, Columbia University Boards of Trustees, the Kennedy School of Government’s Visiting Committee, as well as a trustee of Common Cause and Independent Sector, he also served as a director of The New York Times Company, the Campbell Soup Company and Principal Financial Group. He now serves as an active director of Sotheby’s in New York and has been a trustee of Metropolitan Family Services in Chicago. He is an active member of The Chicago Club, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and The Council on Foreign Relations. He is a Life Trustee of Grinnell College and is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences as well as the National Academy of Public Administration. Stewart earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Grinnell College in 1959, with highest honors in political science. He received a Master of Arts in political science as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Yale University in 1962. At Harvard, he earned Master of Public Administration and Doctor of Public Administration degrees at the Kennedy School of Government in 1969 and 1975, respectively. In addition, he studied international law, organization, and economics at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1960 to 1962, and completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in the summer of 1983. Stewart is a native of Chicago, where he graduated from McCosh Grammar School and Hyde Park High School. He is married to Isabel Carter Stewart, former Executive Director of Girls Inc. and the Chicago Foundation for Women. They have two sons, Jay and Carter, both attorneys.
Jessie L. Ternberg '46

A 1946 honors graduate from Grinnell with a B.A. in chemistry, Dr. Ternberg received a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry at the University of Texas and an M.D. degree from Washington University School of Medicine. She is Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Pediatrics at the Washington University School of Medicine and past Chief of Pediatric surgery of Children's Hospital of the Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Ternberg has been active in the Alumni Association, has spoken at the College's Scholars' Convocation, and has given advice and counsel on various matters with regard to health care careers for students, educational development, and other concerns of the College. Among other honors, an endowed lectureship has been established in Dr. Ternberg's honor at the Washington University School of Medicine.
Barrett Thomas '97
Dr. Thomas received a B.A. in mathematics/economics (with honors) from Grinnell and holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. He is an associate professor with tenure in the Department of Management Sciences at the University of Iowa. Dr. Thomas is also the coordinator of the Process Excellence track of the Strategic Innovation Academy in the full-time MBA program of the Tippie School of Management. His areas of expertise are process improvement, logistics, vehicle routing, dynamic programming, and heuristic search. Dr. Thomas was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 1997. He is active in his field as a speaker, researcher, and as an editor and referee for peer-reviewed journals.
Matthew E. Welch '96
Matthew Welch '96, is an executive in the field of education technology. He has focused on this field for over 15 years, working with companies that help students, teachers, and schools to improve learning outcomes and scale up great programs. Matthew has worked in several areas of education, including international education, K-12, and test prep. He has worked in both non-profit and for-profit sectors, for companies like The Rotary Foundation, Kaplan Inc., Teachscape, Junyo Learning Analytics, and the Institute of International Education.
Matthew is a 1996 graduate of Grinnell, earning honors for majors in Spanish and Theater. He later earned an MPA from Columbia University, where studied business, education, and public policy.
Matthew has been an active volunteer for the college since graduation, working with admissions recruiting and career advising for current students. Matthew served on the Alumni Council from 2007-2013 and was its president during the 2012-2013 academic year.
Eric E. Whitaker '87
Dr. Whitaker holds a B.A. in chemistry from Grinnell College, a medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine (1993) and a master's of public health from Harvard (1991). He completed his primary care and internal medicine residency at San Francisco General Hospital during the initial AIDS epidemic. In 2003, he accepted the position of Director of Illinois State Department of Public Health. In 2007, he joined The University of Chicago Medical Center as its executive vice-president for strategic alliances. His appointment at the University of Chicago includes community-based research to build a network of partnerships to broaden urban medical services. Prior to his appointment in 2003, Dr. Whitaker was an attending physician in Internal Medicine at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital's Collaborative Research Unit. In 1998, he helped found Project Brotherhood: a Black Men's Clinic, which is a weekly clinic for African-American men housed in Woodlawn Adult Health Center on Chicago's Southside and funded by the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. Dr. Whitaker also is an assistant professor at Rush Medical College's Department of Medicine and Preventive Medicine and maintains his clinical association with Project Brotherhood. Dr. Whitaker is married to Dr. Cheryl Rucker-Whitaker, an assistant professor of preventive medicine at Chicago's Rush medical College.
David White '90
David White is the National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator of Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artist (SAG-AFTRA). Prior to rejoining SAG, where he previously served as General Counsel from 2002 to 2006, White was Managing Principal of Los Angeles-based Entertainment Strategies Group LLC, providing consulting services to the entertainment industry. A graduate of Stanford Law School and a Rhodes Scholar, White was a labor and employment attorney at O'Melveny & Myers LLP before joining the executive ranks of SAG. He is currently Chair of the Board of the SAG-Producers Pension and Health Plans, former Chair of the Board of Trustees at his alma mater, Grinnell College, and the current Vice Chair of the Industry Advancement and Cooperative Fund. White is a Board member of the Volunteers of America–Greater Los Angeles and of the SAG Foundation, and has served as a Los Angeles Area Commissioner for urban planning and development. He has been a contributing writer for the Los Angeles Lawyer and has served as a frequent commentator on entertainment industry trends for numerous national and industry publications and radio shows. In 2010, White was named "Entertainment, Sports & Art Law Section Attorney of the Year" by the National Bar Association.
A business leader, Wimer is owner/chair of Business Publications Corp. in Des Moines, Iowa. The company publishes 25 local and regional print and digital products and provides custom publishing and book publishing services.
She attended Morningside College and serves on the institution’s board and on the boards of other organizations in Iowa and around the country. Wimer’s civic leadership includes service on many fundraising committees and her current work promoting gender equity. She formerly owned Iowa Title Co. She is also founder of Winefest Des Moines. Wimer chaired the Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and the National Alliance of Area Business Publications, and was inducted into Greater Des Moines Committee’s Business Hall of Fame — the first woman to accomplish any of those feats. She also was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame.
Henry T. Wingate '69
After serving with the U.S. Attorney and District Attorney offices in Mississippi, Judge Wingate became the first African American appointed to that state's federal bench in 1985. He continues to serve as Federal Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi. Earlier, he served in the U.S. Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps and taught at Golden Gate University, Mississippi College School of Law, Mississippi Judicial College, and the University of Houston Law Center. He has won several national and local service awards and has been active in community affairs in Jackson, Mississippi, where he lives. He graduated from Grinnell in 1969 with a B.A. in philosophy and received a law degree from Yale in 1972. He received an honorary degree from Grinnell in 1986.
