Haines Hall was named for Joanna Harris Haines 1865, the first woman ever to earn a diploma from a college west of the Mississippi. She graduated from Grinnell College at the end of the Civil War. She and her husband, attorney R.M. Haines, settled in Grinnell and were dedicated to College and community. “Cottage Four” of the South Campus residence halls for women was named in her honor in 1931, the year she died.
