Harry Hopkins House as seen from Park Street
Street Address:
1131 Park Street History
Harry Hopkins House is on the west side of the street at 1131 Park, almost directly opposite Herrick Chapel. This Queen Anne structure with prominent tower and Palladian window was the 19th-century residence of Joshua Metcalf Chamberlain (1825-1897), librarian, treasurer, and trustee of the College, and donor of the land for Mears Cottage. In 1982 the house was renovated by the College and named for Harry Lloyd Hopkins (1890-1946), the 1912 Grinnell graduate who became world-famous as the chief aide to President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression and World War II. The building houses faculty offices.
