WORK FROM OFF-CAMPUS PROGRAMS
Students should meet early with the major and program advisors to discuss and plan for study abroad.
Particular programs, e.g.,Argentina, have special requirements and students should go over these
carefully at the outset. Students need the approval of Grinnell to study off-campus and need to be accepted
formally by the program. Some programs are extremely competitive and therefore students should have an
alternative option in case a particular program does not approve their applications
In selecting a program and specific courses, keep in mind the following guidelines concerning which courses
from off-campus count toward the Spanish major.
a) the Department considers appropriate courses from those off-campus programs that it supports and
recommends for majors;
b) courses from off-campus will not count toward the specific course requirements listed above:
343, 377 or 383, 385 or 386;
c) a maximum of 12 credits can be applied toward the 32 credit major;
d) the Department will only accept courses that fit the following descriptions:
1) Spanish language courses (FOR EXAMPLE: conversation, composition, stylistics, phonetics, semantics,
history of the language, etc.);
and /or
2) literature courses on Spain & Latin America that do not cover material & texts in classes regularly offered
in the Spanish Department at Grinnell.
NOTE Some programs' courses are 3 credit classes. If a student needs 4 credits from off-campus, a 3 credit
class from off-campus will not be sufficient.
