Teaching at Grinnell can sometimes be overwhelming, but the ARC is here to help. Faculty and staff members from the resource centers are happy to sit down with you and discuss how we can support your teaching, advising and mentoring goals.

ARC Teams

If you would like an ARC Team to support you as you develop and teach one of your courses, please contact Heather Lobban-Viravong (lobbanvh) or Richard Fyffe (fyffe).

Support for Your Students

  • Academic Advising: The staff in Academic Advising provide individual instruction and coaching on academic and life skills, including but not limited to: time management, organization and planning (e.g., understanding course expectations, overcoming procrastination); academic preparedness (e.g., note-taking, test preparation, study skills, class participation); and academic planning (e.g., choosing a major; determining academic plan or credits to graduation; interpreting academic policies; interacting effectively with faculty advisers). We also coordinate peer tutoring for subjects within the humanities and social studies divisions, and academic accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Libraries: The Libraries offer Library Labs, one-on-one research consultations, for students at all levels, from first-years who are transitioning to college-level research to MAP students who need help finding very specialized resources. Students will need to schedule their own Library Lab, but faculty can refer students who need research assistance to the Library Lab sign-up form or to their department’s consulting librarian.
  • Math Lab: In the Math Lab, Katherine McClelland (mcclella) can make time to individually tutor students faculty are particularly concerned about. Students schedule their own appointments, but it’s best to call ahead so that Katherine can prioritize her time with the students.
  • Reading Lab: The Reading Lab can help students who are having difficulties with their reading efficiency by helping them to improve vocabulary, comprehension, concentration and time management. If you’re concerned about a student’s reading comprehension, email Joan Mohan (mohanj).
  • Science Learning Center: In the Science Learning Center, Minna Mahlab (mahlab) will work individually with students in introductory courses at the request of faculty.  Just call or email.
  • Writing Lab: The Writing Lab staff provides classes and tutoring sessions for students who are unfamiliar with the conventions of college writing or who may have difficulty getting started or who would like to improve their writing style. Students usually sign up independently, but Lab staff members are happy to honor faculty requests for help with a particular student. Email Judy Hunter (hunterj) to discuss how to get extra support for a student in need.
  • Data Analysis and Social Inquiry Lab: Students can come to the Data Analysis and Social Inquiry Lab for assistance finding and analyzing data.  Lab personnel have expertise in making maps and analyzing spatial information, as well as conducting both statistical and qualitative research.  The center is particularly useful for students doing final projects and MAPs.
