Annual HHMI Symposium: 2002-2008

Undergraduate Research in Biology, Chemistry, and Neuroscience in the Iowa Area.

In August, 2000, Grinnell College was awarded an Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. As part of this award, we organized an annual symposium to highlight the research being done in Iowa by undergraduates and their mentors in the fields of biology, chemistry, and neuroscience. From 2002 to 2008 we gathered students and faculty from across Iowa for a day of stimulating learning and scientific exchange. Each year the symposium featured two student poster sessions, a keynote lecture, and lunch for participants. Keynote speakers:

  • Sonya Franklin - University of Iowa - 2002
  • Carolyn Bertozzi - University of California, Berkeley - 2003
  • Ad Bax - National Institutes of Health - 2004
  • Tom Cech - Howard Hughes Medical Institute - 2005
  • Peter Agre - Duke University - 2006
  • Darcy B. Kelley - Columbia University - 2007
  • Charles F. Stevens - Salk Institute - 2008
