A permanent seed collection was started in 2001 to:
- provide examples of seed characteristics,
- help students identify and measure seed characters for research projects, and
- help staff and volunteers distinguish seeds from other floral parts when cleaning seeds collected at CERA and local remnants for restoration projects.
Seed Collection Guide
A seed collection guide was created in the fall of 2002 by the CERA Manager and Michaela Meckel '05. The guide contains black and white images of 30 prairie species with mature fruit and brief notes on how to collect the seed. For a free copy of the guide, contact the CERA Manager.
Volunteer Opportunities
Collect seed for our permanent collection and for restoration projects.
Expand our seed collection guide by photographing additional species in fruit.
