CERA Summer Restoration Jobs 2009

Description: These 10-week, full time (40 hours/week) summer positions
require a willingness to work very independently and outside under adverse conditions (heat, bugs) on
restoration and maintenance activities at Grinnell College's Conard Environmental
Research Area (CERA). The interns will be supervised by our CERA manager, Larissa
Mottl, and CERA field technician, Bob Groenendyk.
Tasks include: (1) Controlling invasive plant species by hand-pulling and
applying herbicides. (2) Assisting with research projects. (3) Conducting biological
inventories of butterflies, aquatic invertebrates, plants. (4) Monitoring bird nest
boxes and snake coverboards. (5) Curating natural history collections. (6) Mapping
using GIS software and a GPS unit. (7) Assisting with data entry. (8) Maintaining
trails. (9) Photographing various habitats and seasonal changes in vegetation.
(10) Watering plants in the CERA greenhouse. (11) Assisting with summer tours.
This summer may also include assisting with goat care, handling, and weekend
trips to CERA to check on the goats.
The position pays $8.25/hour. The starting date is Monday, June 1, 2009.
You must be able to provide your own transportation to/from CERA.

CERA Student Assistant Positions: '09-'10 Academic Year
4 Positions Availalbe (2 Fall, 2 Spring)
Four student positions are available, two during fall semester and two during spring
semester, to assist the CERA Manager with field work (including tree removal,
prescribed burning, GPS mapping, vegetation surveys, seed collecting, seed
cleaning), and data management and analyses (including Microsoft Access
database development and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping). The fall
positions start Monday, Sept 14 and end Friday, December 11, 2009.
The spring positions start Monday, January 25 and end Friday, May 7, 2010.
Work Schedule. Work Schedule. Assistants will be expected to work
4 hours per week (@ $7.50 per hour), except during campus recesses. Work
schedules will be flexible but preference will be given to individuals available from
1:00 - 5:00 p.m. at least one day per week. Much of the work will be conducted at
CERA and transportation will be provided.

components at CERA, and have experience with computer spreadsheet and

Center for Prairie Studies Environmental Education Internship. The purpose of
this internship is to provide training and experience in the development and
implementation of environmental education programs in the Grinnell area.
The intern, with guidance from an education faculty member, will design a
program on environmental topics that may include activities such as field trips,
special events, workshops, and performances. The program may focus on a
specific grade level, or provide opportunities for families and children to learn
together, or offer environmental awareness and learning experiences suited
primarily for adults. The intern will be encouraged to form collaborations with
individuals from local school districts, conservation organizations (Tallgrass Prairie
Audubon Society, Iowa Prairie Network, County Conservation Boards), Grinnell
College's Conard Environmental Research Area, Rock Creek Lake Alliance, youth
group leaders (4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Galaxy) and community
enhancement organizations such as Imagine Grinnell. Contact Martha Voyles,
