Lake Hamilton, Fla.
Aug. 10, 1973

Dear Mr. Graham,

Thanks for your letter and for the picture of the lake. Do not return this picture - of a hillside you might recognize. ["Louisa Conard with a class, 1916" is the second image of the historical photo tour] I believe it is a part of the research area. In the old days we reached it by going to Kellogg on a morning train, walking east some distance, and in the late afternoon taking a train back to Grinnell at the little town of Turner, which I no longer see on maps.

This picture was taken on a Saturday in May 1916. Dr. Conard was spending the semester working in the Harvard herbarium; three years out of college. I was in Grinnell teaching the first year botany course (and one other). I believe my title was "assistant in botany." In this picture, wearing a white middy blouse and hat, I am standing at the far right.

That was my last semester in Grinnell for several years. My mother died the following summer and I stayed at home in the small northwest Iowa town where we lived, to keep house for my father and the three young children in the family, teaching in the local high school there until 1923.

I don't recognize the flowers in the foreground, but I can name about half of the people.
