Perley Fall-Burned Prairie.
This 3-acre prairie was reconstructed on cropland enrolled in the Conservation
Reserve Program. It was seeded in 1987 with grasses and in 1991 and 1996 with
forbs. It has been burned annually since 1988. By burning in the fall, we can
demonstrate the effects of bare soil during the winter and the rapid warming of the
soil and growth of certain plants in the spring. White wild indigo (Baptisia leucantha)
and pale purple coneflower (Echinacea pallida) are abundant in this prairie
and bloom profusely in June.
