Off-Campus Research Opportunities for SUMMER 2008

Amgen Scholars. Undergraduate Summer Research in Science and Biotechnology, with program locations at Caltech, Columbia University Barnard College, Howard University, MIT, Stanford, University of Washington, UC-Berkeley, UC-Los Angeles, UC-San Diego, UC- San Francisco.

Internships in Biology. An incredible list of summer research opportunities all over the country, maintained by Tom Frederick, Department of Biological Sciences, Rochester Institute of Technology.

NSF. Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (REU), in Biological Sciences, Ocean Sciences: The National Science Foundation supported site lists a variety of programs offered through institutions. The site lists the program, institution, contact information, and a few notes. Not much information is provided about each program, but it does provide enough contact information in order to gather more specific program information. The site is extensive and list opportunities in a variety of areas, including molecular biology, zoology, biological chemisty, nutrition, neuroscience, marine and ocean science.

NIH. Undergraduate Scholarship Program (for students from disadvantaged backgrounds); also Summer opportunities at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute for all undergraduates, employment and internship opportunities.

Summer Internships in Biology: This website lists several opportunities for summer research. The programs listed are offered through universities throughout the country. The research areas include biomedical research, ecology and environmental studies, marine biology, as well as other biology opportunities. The list is extensive and provides links directly to the program.

Biostatistics. Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics, 6-week program at three institutions: Boston University, North Carolina State University, University of Wisconsin. Sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Department of Energy. Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships, Office of Science, Dept. of Energy: 10-week summer programs at various laboratories.

Great Lakes Research and Education Center (GLREC) Mini-Grant Program summer internships in biological or cultural research. The center is located at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and services 10 parks in the region. These include Apostle Islands NL, Grand Portage NM, Isle Royale NP, Indiana Dunes NL, Pictured Rocks NL, St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, Sleeping Bear Dunes NL, and Voyageurs NP. Deadline is 28-Mar-08.

TIM Consortium: spread out over six campuses, each with two students working on problems related to Theoretically Interesting Molecules (TIM). The entire group of six faculty and 12 students will get together twice during the summer, once to spend a week at Chapel Hill for the Reaction Mechanisms Conference and again at the end of the summer to report on results. AL. Auburn University: NSF-REU on Biosensors. This multi-disciplinary, multi-departmental REU program is open to all undergraduates enrolled in Biology, Chemistry, and Engineering. Deadline is 24-Mar-08.

AL. University of Alabama at Birmingham: 8-week program sponsored by the Departments of Environmental Health Sciences, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, Physiology and Biophysics, and Pharmacology and Toxicology and the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center.

AL. Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, AL: NSF REU in Natural Resource and Environmental Sciences. Deadline is 7-Mar-08.

AR. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, Eureka Springs AR: Internships as animal keeper or horticultural intern at this exotic cats rescue facility. Deadline is 15-Apr-08.

CA. Pepperdine University: SURB summer undergrad research in biology. Deadline is 1-Mar-2008.

CA. Caltech: MURF for underrepresented students in science.

CO. University of Colorado: REU at the Mountain Research Station - Ecology, Evolution & Behavior. Deadline is 29-Feb-08.

CO. Colorado State University: Short-term Training for Minority Undergraduate Students in Biomedical Sciences. Deadline is 29-Feb-08.

DC. Smithsonian Research Training Program: museum-based in-residence program for about 20 undergraduates in Washington, DC. Deadine is 1-Feb-08.

IA. Iowa State University, Laurence H. Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics: Computational and Systems Biology Summer Institute. Dealine is 15-Mar-08.

IA. University of Iowa, Summer Microbiology Undergraduate Research. 9-weeks. Deadline is 15-Feb-08.

IA. University of Iowa, SUMR Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research Program. Sponsored by the Iowa Medical Scientist Training Program, offers exposure to the career of physician-scientist for students interested in future combined MD/PhD training. A wide variety of research areas. Deadline is 4-Feb-08.

IL. Bradley University, Peoria IL: REU program in Integrated Ecology. Deadline is 3-Mar-08.

IL. Northwestern University Summer REU. 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. Research areas include ceramics, polymers, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, molecular electronics and biomaterials. Deadline is 15-Feb-08.

IL. Willowbrook Wildlife Foundation, Glen Ellyn, IL. Fellowships in Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation. Fellowships: Keeper, Vet Tech, Educaiton, Project. Fellows provide housing and transportation. Deadline is 15-Feb-08. Info/Application: 630-580-7115

IL. Chicago Botanic Garden, Division of Plant Biology and Conservation.

LA. Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, Summer Internships. Internship topics include fish spawning/larval feeding; marsh nekton distribution; hypoxia/eutrophication in coastal waters; ecosystem ecology/biogeochemistry of streams/estuaries; data management/networking. Deadline is 1-Apr-08.

MA. Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology; focuses on dynamics of forest ecosystem and their response to natural and human disturbances. Deadline is 1-Feb-08.

MI. CILER Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research, Great Lakes Summer Student Fellowship Program. Twenty-four 12-week full-time positions. Deadline is 22-Feb-08.

MI. Hope College REU. Several science disciplines awarding stipends for summer research at Hope.

MO. University of Missouri-Columbia: Research projects in the areas of biology, biochemistry, radiochemistry, and plant genomics are available for this summer's 9-week program. Contact Professor Chuck Sullivan by February 8, 2008, if you want more information and application material.

MO. Stowers Institute Scholars Program, Kansas City MO. 8-week program.

MO. Danforth Plant Science Center (St. Louis): Summer Internships. Deadline is 11-Feb-08.

MT, FALL 2008 Field Semester. Northwest Connections' Landscape and Livelihood Fall Field Semester: intensive two-month (Sept & Oct, 2008) educational program focusing on ecology and community-based conservation in the glaciated Swan Valley. Deadline is 1-Feb-08.

NC. Yeast Genetics at Duke University: 2 undergrads needed.

ND. North Dakota State University: departments of chemistry and molecular biology, pharmaceutical sciences, veterinary and microbiological sciences, and biological sciences. Deadline is 15-Mar-08.

NE. Nebraska Redox Biology Center: Research areas include molecular medicine, environmental biochemistry, and plant biochemistry. Deadline is 3-Mar-08.

NJ. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey: Research in the RISE program spans the biomedical, physical and behavioral sciences, math, and engineering. 8- or 10-week experiences. Rolling admission begins at the end of January and is highly competitive.

NJ. Rutgers University - Camden campus and Pinelands Field Station REU: a variety of different research areas (biochemistry, biophysics, botany, chemistry, ecology, evolution, microbiology, molecular biology, neurobiology and zoology). Contact information at their website. Deadline is 28-Mar-08.

NV. University of Nevada, Las Vegas: NSF REU in Environmental Microbiology. Deadline is 7-Mar-08.

NY. Ecology Research for Undergraduates at Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, New York. Deadline is 15-Feb-08.

NY. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY, Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Program. 10-week program with stipend. Application deadline is 1-Feb-08.

OH. University of Cincinnati College of Medicine: Selection of students for program begins on February 1; early application is encouraged!

OR. Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center: summer REU. Deadline is 15-Feb-08.

OR. *COURSES* Oregon Institute of Marine Biology.

PA. University of Pennsylvania: Molecular Biology program program provides full-time internships in basic laboratory research related to gene therapy of cystic fibrosis, other genetic diseases, cancer, and vaccines. Deadline is 15-Feb-08.

PA. University of Pittsburgh: Dept. of pharmacology, or Bioengineering and Bioinformatics.

RI. Brown University: REU opportunity in a historical reconstruction of hurricane impacts in the Gulf Coast of Mexico (1950-2005); 10-week position involves assembling and analyzing multiple datasets and integrating the information within a GIS. TX. Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi: SURF program, Anthropogenic Impact on the Environment. Deadline is 3-Mar-08.

GERMANY. Undergraduate Internships. German Academic Exchange Service will match studetns with German PhD student for the summer.

GHANA. The University of Florida invites students to participate in its NSF-funded International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana from May through July 2008. The goal of this program is to expand the educational experience of participants through research in ecology, environmental science, and conservation biology in tropical sub-Sahara Africa.
