Roots and Changes: Issues in Contemporary Japanese Culture and Society.
Spring/Summer, 2005
With the generous support of a Freeman Foundation grant, and under the auspices
of the Center for International Studies, the College sponsored a faculty development
seminar on
Japan that met regularly during the spring semester, 2005, and culminated in
a two-week traveling seminar in Japan and in curricular projects currently under
development or implemented during 2005-06. Readings for the on-campus
portion of the seminar were finalized in light of the interests of the participants,
as was the specific in-country itinerary. Much of the seminar was informed
by work done over the past year by the Freeman faculty reading group on Japan.
The overarching theme of the seminar, as its title suggests, was Japan in the
modern world. The traveling seminar included time in Tokyo, in the Osaka/Kyoto area,
and in Hiroshima and environs, and included meetings with Japanese scholars,
local political figures, artists, and others; tours of cultural and historical sites;
lectures on topics considered during
on-campus discussions; and activities
involving the ACM/GLCA Japan Study Program at Waseda University.
Seminar Goals
1) Develop faculty interest and expertise in Japan in order to integrate more Japanese/ material into the curriculum beginning in 2005-06;
2) Assist faculty in furthering research projects through collaboration with Japanese specialists in their fields;
3) Explore the possibility of developing new institutional ties with Japanese universities, including faculty exchange possibilities
4) Increase faculty competence to advise students on off-campus study in Japan
5) Encourage faculty to consider applying to direct the ACM/GLCA Japan Study Program at Waseda University at some time in the future.
