Gerald V. Lalonde, Benedict Professor of Classics, became Professor Emeritus this summer after forty-two years of service as a teacher, scholar, and administrator. Jerry came to Grinnell in 1969 and has made outstanding contributions to the College as a mainstay in the Department of Classics, teaching an exceptional range of courses and guiding the department with his wide experience and sound judgment.
He has a special love of Greece, where he has carried out archaeological and epigraphical research over many years; he has studied classical sites and monuments all over the Mediterranean as well as in museum collections elsewhere. In addition to teaching and researching the physical remains of classical antiquity, Jerry has taken on the role of tour leader for students, alumni, and friends of Grinnell College; participants in his tours have fond memories of their superb quality and of their spirit of intellectual discovery combined with warm fellowship.
Honor Jerry with a gift in support of the Lalonde Fellowship in the Department of Classics.
