The Center for Prairie Studies encourages students to pursue internships related to the study and appreciation of our region, and we maintain connections with a number of excellent institutions which offer stimulating internships. The Center will be happy to discuss internship possibilities with interested students.
Gabrielle Robinson-Bajuscik is this summer's GALFA (Grinnell Area Local Food Alliance) intern. She is working with a number of organizations in Grinnell - a local CSA's, a restaurant, college dining services, and Mid-Iowa Community Action - to advance the cause of local food in the community and on campus. She also works in both the campus garden and the new community garden.
Erica Hougland is working with City farms in Chicago, becoming familiar with its model of urban agriculture and the low income residents of the neighborhood in which City Farms works.
Grace Marengo-Sanchez received support to continue work with the Midwest Immigration Project in Des Moines, with whom she did a spring semester internship learning about the immigration policy and legal situation of the undocumented workers arrested when the federal government raided Agriprocessors in Postville, Iowa, in May of 2008. During the summer internship, which she will do under the auspices of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Postville, Grace will be working on behalf of the families and individuals impacted by the raid.
