  • Ph.D. from University of Chicago (1940)                  
  • Honorary doctorates from Grinnell College (1956) and Carnegie Institute of Technology (1967)
  • Believed public policy should be based on rigorous economic analysis. Worked at the Department of Commerce and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
  • Wrote numerous books on inflation and monetary and fiscal policy
  • Professor at Stanford University (1966-1994)

  • Advocate for improving economic education. His textbook, Economics: An Introduction to Analysis and Policy, went through eleven editions.

Henry Carter Adams, Class of 1874 Henry Carter Adams

  • First Ph.D. graduate from John Hopkins University (1878)
  • Wrote The State in Relation to Industrial Action (1887). Adams was a supporter of labor unions, and one of the first American economists to study the roles of the public and private sectors.
  • Worked at Interstate Commerce Commission, making valuable contributions to the area of public trade regulation.
  • Professor at University of Michigan (1886-1921).
  • With Richard Ely, he was a promoter of the American Economic Association and is regarded as one of the forerunners of the American American Institutionalist school.
