Before earning her Ph.D., she taught high school English and journalism for eleven years. She teaches EDU 101, Educational Principles in a Pluralistic Society, EDU 211: The Politics of Education Assessment, EDU 250: the Exceptional Child, and EDU 334: Theory and Practice in the Teaching of Language Arts. In addition, she supervises student teachers and directs the student teaching seminar. She has two interconnected research interests: the teaching and assessment of writing, and the use of critical multicultural approaches in the teaching of young adult literature. In both areas of research she focuses on social justice concerns and explores the effects educational practices have on student access to and engagement in learning.
