I work as a parliamentary intern. My work focuses on obtaining and interpreting constituency data for my MP, in order to educate him on demographic changes in the area he represents. I currently am spending the majority of my time gathering statistics on unemployment, as my MP is attempting to keep the government from closing a job centre in his area. The MP is an extremely laidback guy and is immensely easy to work with; he lets me work on what I think is most suited to my talents and makes sure that I am exposed to as many areas of parliamentary work as possible. In the first week, I attended Parliamentary Question Time and went to a couple Defense Committee meetings where I sat quietly in a corner and avoided calling attention to myself. I've also learned an immense amount about Scotland, despite not being able to understand a word of rapid, Scottish-accented English. I will visit my MP's constituency in a few weeks, in order to work more effectively for their community, despite not being able to und
erstand a word of what anyone is saying. Working in Parliament is a great experience and I highly recommend it as a way of learning about UK politics.
