Grinnell-in-London does cost more than attending Grinnell College in Iowa. Please see the Financial Aid web page devoted to Off-Campus Study for estimated costs for this program. Financial aid, fellowships, and subsidies may help defray this additional cost- please read the specifics below.
Fellowships
Three Harold and Antonia Garst Lee '54 Fellowships of $3,500 each are awarded annually to Grinnell College students accepted into the Grinnell-in-London program. The first of these fellowships were awarded in the Fall of 1993. They were established by the Roswell and Elizabeth Garst Foundation to honor Harold Lee, a former professor and director of the London program, and Antonia Garst Lee '54 who taught English for many years at the American School in London.
The Board considers all GIL applicants for the fellowships on the basis on their academic performance and financial need. Tuition remission students are not eligible for this fellowship. Above: Harold and Antonia Garst Lee
You might also consider applying for a Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship, administered from the United Kingdom. The scholarship is open to undergraduate students who are currently enrolled at a US college or university, and who will be studying abroad in the UK for at least one term/semester. For the 2013/14 academic year, full details, including eligibility criteria, application form, and instructions can be downloaded from the news page of the AASAP/UK website: http://www.aasapuk.org/services/news.php.
For the 2013/14 academic year, completed applications for a Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship must be received by midnight (GMT) on Friday 12th April 2013.
Financial Aid
Students approved for participation in GIL who wish to receive aid must go through the same financial aid process as students intending to remain on campus. All financial aid deadlines and requirements still apply. Awards for the fall semester are generally mailed in June. Certain conditions apply to GIL that may affect your award:
- Trustee Honor Scholarships and Grinnell Foreign Grants can be used for GIL but cannot be adjusted upwards to reflect increased costs.
- Tuition-remission benefits do apply to the Grinnell-in-London program.
- Work-study eligibility may be replaced by loans.
- Aid will not under any circumstances exceed the cost of attendance.
If you have questions about your own personal financial aid situation, please contact Gretchen Zimmermann, Associate Director of Financial Aid.
Subsidies
Grinnell College pays for several course-related expenses (e.g. board on field trips and admission fees), as well as 100% transportation subsidies for course related field trips, and theater tickets for four to eight plays.
