The GIW program is a truly powerful opportunity each fall for Grinnell students' professional development and application of their education to future endeavors. The program synergizes an intensive internship placement with immersion in the dynamic world of the nation's capital and a liberal arts education. You discover how public policy influences the work that is conducted in Washington, D.C. and experience life in a city that is one of the most diverse in the U.S. and one of the richest centers of its history and cultural life. You also develop relationships with members of one of Grinnell's most vibrant alumni communities and benefit from advice that they can offer for your life after Grinnell. One Grinnell faculty member serves each fall as the professor for one of your courses, supervisor of your internship, and adviser in exploring the world of Washington. Since Fall semester 2012, we have been pleased to partner with the Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) D.C. Programs. You take a course on public policy from the director of WUSTL in D.C., benefitting from his guidance on your internship search, and interacting with some of WUSTL's law and undergraduate students inside and outside of the classroom. The opportunities for internships in D.C. are virtually limitless: past GIW students have found rewarding internships in fields including policy, finance, education, science, and social work. GIW is a terrific program for students who are interested in learning about themselves in a professional work environment, meeting professionals in a variety of fields, and learning about the nation's capital within the framework of a liberal arts program.
