Doug Hess '91 majored in psychology at Grinnell College. While in college he took a year off to live in Washington, DC for a summer, interning for a small non-profit that worked on human rights and democracy in Haiti. He then lived in Haiti for nine months before returning to complete his degree. Just out of college, Doug worked as a community and labor organizer. He moved to DC in 1992, eventually working as a senior analyst for national advocacy and research organizations on issues ranging from voting rights to child nutrition. He received his M.A. in policy studies from Johns Hopkins University and is currently completing his Ph.D. in public policy at George Washington University.
