J. Montgomery Roper (Monty) received his B.A. from Ithaca College in 1991 with majors in Anthropology and Biology. His M.A. was done at the University of Kentucky and his Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh, both in Anthropology. He also completed interdisciplinary graduate certificate programs in Environmental Systems and in Latin American Studies. Monty's interests lie in the political economy of natural resource management, economic development, and indigenous peoples in Latin America. His research focuses at the community level and at the web of actors and organizations that interact most directly with the community. As an applied anthropologist, he is interested in addressing issues of sustainable development through program and project evaluation and policy analysis and recommendation. He has undertaken policy-oriented contract work for the World Bank, the Nicaraguan Government, and Chemonics International. He teaches courses in the Global Development Studies concentration and the Department of
Anthro
pology. While Monty's research and teaching have examined the evolution of development theory and the impact of foreign aid on developing countries, his GIW course will enable him to explore in more depth the context within which specific US foreign aid policies are formed.
