International Student House (ISH)
All students (international or not!) age 21 by the start of the program are eligible to apply to the ISH for housing, though there are only a small number of spaces reserved for citizens of the United States of America. The majority of students living there are international students. The average age of ISH residents was 27 in 2003. ISH is located 3 blocks north of our classroom off Dupont Circle. The ISH House consists of a main residence that was built in the style of an English manor (lots of dark, ornate wood and beautiful ceilings and windows) with two additional buildings attached. GIW students would have roommates from other countries and other programs. Sharing a room with a Grinnell student is not an option. Students share bathrooms and living spaces within the house in addition to a computer lab, library, and a beautiful courtyard. ISH has a cafeteria and provides breakfast and supper. This cost is included in the cost of housing. The student lounges have refrig
erators for food storage so that students can buy groceries for lunch. At ISH there is the opportunity for students to work for a reduction in the cost of housing. Grinnell College students cannot request to be roommates at ISH as they purposefully mix and match different nationalities and programs throughout the residence. Please see the ISH website for more information and an application: http://www.ishdc.org/.
