Gene's greatest interest for many years has been the use of computing in teaching and learning mathematics. The most significant result of his efforts in this area is the textbook, Visual Linear Algebra, which he coauthored with Michael Pepe and which was published by John Wiley & Sons.
In recent years Gene has focused on problem solving, working on problems in the American Mathematical Monthly, the Mathematics Magazine, and the College Mathematics Journal. This work led to a research project that culminated in the paper "Hankel Operators plus Orthogonal Polynomials Yield Combinatorial Identities," which will appear in the Online Journal of Analytic Combinatorics in 2009.
