Study of the mathematical sciences develops logical thinking and quantitative ability. Mathematical skills in rigorous deductive analysis and in the use of data are germane to many disciplines. Depending on their background, students may enter the study of mathematics at different points, and majors pursue many different interests.

Alice Nadeau, a 3rd year mathematics major from Waterloo, Iowa, has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship. Alice is an active member of the Mathematics and Statistics SEPC and is currently studying abroad in Jordan. In the summer of 2011, Alice conducted research under the Mentored Advanced Project program directed by Prof. Marc Chamblerand. See the related news item.

The Grinnell College Putnam team placed in the top 10% of all participating institutions for the second consecutive year. As reported by the Putnam committee:

"A total of 4440 students from 572 colleges and universities in Canada and the United States participated in the Competition. There were teams from more than 460 institutions"
