Intern: Emily Guenther '07 Dec.
Internship: Appalshop

Whitesburg, KY 41858
Summary Description:
Appalshop is a regional arts center that celebrates the rich culture of Kentucky and Appalachia, sharing community stories while keeping in mind the poverty and other problems of the area. I hosted Holler to the Hood, a radio show during which prisoners' families called in to give a message to their incarcerated loved ones, and I also produced a ten-part radio series called the Thousand Kites Poetry Workshop. For the radio series I contacted poets across the country who had worked in prisons, recorded them giving a ten-minute poetry lesson and assignment, and edited the audio. I also had experience writing grants.

Internship: The City School
614 Columbia Road
Dorchester, MA 02125
Summary Description:
The City School is a nonprofit that runs several youth empowerment programs. I was involved with the Summer Leadership Program which gives 50 to 60 high school students stipends in order to learn about social justice issues, enact change, and focus on their own growth for seven weeks. Students take a seminar with one of the program teachers on a topic such as immigration or violence, meet with other students from their neighborhood to formulate and enact a Community Action Project (CAP) that addresses violence in that neighborhood, and are assigned to an internship related to their own interests and career goals in Boston. I attended a two-week staff training before the program and assisted the Poverty and Inequality class, lead the White Internalized Oppression and Superiority discussion group, was a CAP mentor, assisted in the Sub/Urban Justice group internship, and led a weekly home support group for students.
