| Intern: | Richard Luong |
| Internship: | Kalihi Palama Healath Center |
| 938 E. Austin Lane | |
| Honolulu HI 96817 | |
| Summary Description: | |
|
This summer I interned at the Kalihi-Palama Health Center (KPHC) in Honolulu, Hawaii. KPHC is a community Health center that serves a district with the highest rates of unemployment and welfare dependence. The area is also home to a large immigrant population, where over half of the residents speak another language besides English as their primary language. KPHC mainly offers medical, dental, optometry, and behavioral health outpatient services to the community, but also provides case management services for the homeless. My internship was with the social services department, which provides support to the healthcare providers. My work included (but was not limited to) meeting with patients to assess their needs, helping patients fill out various applications, researching appropriate community resources available for the patient and facilitating the referral process, observing the health center patient flow, and observing clinical social workers as they evaluated patients. While my internship was spent mostly with the social services department, there were also internship opportunities available with the behavioral health and healthcare for the homeless departments at KPHC.

| Intern: | Young-Eun Park |
| Internship: | Volunteer Lawyers' Network |
| 600 Nicollet Mall, Suite 390A | |
| Minneapolis MN 55402 | |
| Summary Description: | |
| This summer I worked for Volunteer Lawyers Network, an organization of lawyers who do pro-bono work serving low-income individuals in the Twin Cities area. I specifically worked for the Spanish sub-section called Linea Legal Latina (Latin Legal Line). As part of my job I assisted my boss, a family law attorney, run the entire department. My tasks were various, and included answering phone calls from clients to connect them directly to a pro-bono attorney, working as a Spanish interpreter with several high-profile law firms in downtown Minneapolis, sitting in at consultations between the attorney and client, and attending related court hearings in the government center of downtown Minneapolis. I was required to speak Spanish most of the day, as I mostly only interacted with the clients, who only spoke Spanish.. This internship was great for someone like me, who is a Spanish major as well as pre-law, and I gained a great deal of knowledge about both interests. | |

| Summary Description: | |
| Outside In is a non—profit organization that provides services to low-income and homeless youth in Portland, Oregon. Medical care, case management, hot meals, employment resources, activity groups and legal advice, to a name a few. As an intern, the versatility of Outside In’s services benefitted me greatly. During my time at Outside In, I was able to work both the with clients, directly and behind the scenes in an administrative capacity. I divided my time between the Youth Department, the Clinic, the Volunteer Office, and Virginia Woof, a volunteer and client-run division that helps fund the rest of the agency. | |
