Summer 2009 Internships
| Intern: | Claire Branigan |
| Internship: | Neighborhood Justice Center, Inc. |
| 500 Laurel Avenue | |
| St. Paul MN 55102 | |
| Summary Description: | |
| This Summer I had the opportunity to do a Peace Studies Internship with the Neighborhood Justice Center, a non-profit criminal defense law office in St. Paul MN. NJC provides reduced cost and free legal services to people who have been mal-represented I the legal sphere. Most clients live in poverty, the majority of them are people of color, many do not speak English, and some are also disabled. Throughout my time with NJC I did the intake process with potential clients, specifically with Spanish speaking individuals, presented their cases to attorneys, and maintained communication with clients as their case was processed. Through my work with NJC clients, I was able to gain a better understanding of the root causes of many of the crimes that people are charged with. Specifically how quality legal representation can prevent future conflicts from occurring. My time with the NJC gave me a comprehensive introduction into the legal sphere, specifically through the experiences of people who often have little to zero legal representation. | |

| Internship: | Family Access Center of Family Service |
| 1110 6th Street NW | |
| Rochester MN 55920 | |
| Summary Description: | |
| Family Service Rochester is a non-profit organization based in Rochester, MN that is dedicated to building tsrong, healthy families and capable children. They provide a variety of services including counseling, supervised visitation, educational classes, home services and also sub-contract social workers for Olmsted County. My internship was primarily working with the Family Access Center, which offers supervised parenting times and safe exchanges. For this, I worked with the program coordinator to help oversee all the administrative aspects of the program, and ultimately was assigned new cases of my own. An additional part of my internship was to work with the Family Group Decisioin Making team, a group of social workers who facilitate meetings such as case planning conferences, where a client and all involved social workers would come together to share information and develop next steps. The main facilitator would take notes on a white board throughout the meeting, and a note taker, the role I would fill, would type up the notes and print them out for everyone to have a copy. FSR also offers internships for undergraduate students working with their home services and educational classes. | |

| Summary Description: | |
| I worked for the Skylark Project at ICADV. The Skylark Project’s mission is to provide support and services to incarcerated survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. There are three branches of this mission: commutation assistance, education, and re-entry planning. I participated in commutation assistance and education. I worked on one of our client’s cases individually. I met with her every week at the prison and interviewed her. My other primary task was facilitating a Healthy Relationships class at the Girls Juvenile Home in Toledo. This class is one of the more preventive things that the Skylark Project does. My experience was life-changing.. It is what I hope to do for the rest of my life. | |
