W. Joseph Cummins
Associate Professor/Department Chair

Professor Cummins has a B.A. from Xavier University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Emory University and the University of Cincinnati. His course offerings include the history of ancient philosophy and the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle. Cummins also teaches in the Classics department.

Jennifer Kirchmyer-Dobe
Visiting Assistant Professor

Professor Dobe earned her B.A. from the University of New Hampshire and her M.A. and Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. She specializes in history of modern and early modern philosophy, and aesthetics.

John Fennell
Assistant Professor

Professor Fennell has a B.A. and M.A from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and received his Ph.D degree from Northwestern University. His research interests are in the philosophy of language, and concern in particular the problem of normativity and the critical assessment of naturalistic approaches to meaning and mind. He teaches courses in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and logic.

M. Johanna Meehan
Professor

Professor Meehan, received a B.A. from Brandeis University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Boston University. A specialist on Habermas, she teaches ethics, social and political philosophy, and feminist theory.

Tammy Nyden
Assistant Professor

Professor Nyden received a B.A. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a M.A. from Baylor University, and a Ph.D. degree from Claremont Graduate University. A specialist on Spinoza, she teaches courses in Early Modern Philosophy and Philosophy of Science.

Alan D. Schrift
Professor

Alan Schrift Professor Schrift is the F. Wendell Miller Professor of Philosophy, Department Chair, and founding Director of the Grinnell College Center for the Humanities. He has a B.A. from Brown University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University. A specialist on Nietzsche and contemporary French philosophy, he teaches courses in 19th- and 20th-century European philosophy. In addition to his many published articles or book chapters on Nietzsche and French and German twentieth century philosophy, he is the author of three books: Twentieth Century French Philosophy: Key Themes and Thinkers (Oxford: Blackwell Publishers, 2005), Nietzsche's French Legacy: A Genealogy of Poststructuralism (New York: Routledge, 1995), and Nietzsche and the Question of Interpretation: Between Hermeneutics and Deconstruction (New York: Routledge, 1990). Schrift has also edited five collections on a variety of topics: Modernity and the Problem of Evil (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 20 05), Why Nietzsche Still? Reflections on Drama, Culture, and Politics (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2000), The Logic of the Gift: Toward an Ethic of Generosity (New York: Routledge, 1997), The Hermeneutic Tradition: From Ast to Ricoeur (Albany: State University of New York Press, 1990), Transforming the Hermeneutic Context: From Nietzsche to Nancy (Albany: State University of New York Press, 1990). His current research is focused on editing an eight-volume History of Continental Philosophy for Acumen Publishing, and serving as General Editor of The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche, the Stanford University Press translation of Nietzsche's Kritische Studienausgabe.
