The Liberal Arts in Prison Program is a collaborative and diverse effort by students, faculty, and staff. Student volunteers design and facilitate courses in almost every discipline, from history, biology, and religious studies to workshops in the arts. They also tutor GED and math, produce performances both in prison and on campus, and work with incarcerated students to edit an annual anthology. Faculty offer full-length accredited courses as well once-a-week lectures on topics from across the disciplines. Staff administer the program and provide crucial mentoring and support.

Usually, participants begin by teaching: students design and facilitate classes or tutor, and professors give one-session courses. But unique opportunities often arise, and we welcome your ideas-so if you would like to get involved in another way, please be in touch.

Please note that not everyone who applies to teach is guaranteed a spot because of space restrictions and scheduling issues. Scheduling and orientation take place early in the semester at Grinnell, so it's best to contact the Liberal Arts in Prison Program as early in the semester as possible.
