Snack guidelines

The Department of Human Services State of Iowa Guidelines state that nutritious snacks, that are purchased at a store, not homemade, must be provided. The guidelines state the following requirements for preschool children:

  • Serving size is 1/2 cup of food or 1/2-1 slice of bread
  • Two of the following four food groups must be served at each snack time
    • Milk
    • Fruit, Vegetable, 100% Juice
    • Breads, Cereals
    • Meat, Meat Alternative
  • Two foods from the same food group cannot be served as the entire snack, i.e., fruit and juice as the snack, there must be a bread, milk or meat also served.
  • Small quantities are encouraged (1/2 gallon of drink)
  • Drinks must be milk or 100% juice

Perishable foods brought from home must be refrigerated and maintained to avoid contamination or spoilage. Sanitary and safe methods for food preparation, serving and storage must be sufficient to prevent the transmission of disease, infestation of insects and rodents, and spoilage of food. Staff preparing food shall have clean hands or wear protective gloves and use clean serving utensils. The dishes are sanitized with antibacterial dish soap and a tepid water rinse followed by a bleach water rinse.
