Shes continues to speak Russian with friends and acquaintances.

EMILY SILLIMAN (Russian). Emily has not been involved with the Russian-speaking world in the last few years. She is mostly raising two little girls at the moment. She is studying Arabic. Emily says: "Studying Arabic is an interesting exercise for a Russian speaker. The grammer is similarly complex - like a giant puzzle. You have to be patient, but the language is fascinating. I am not sure where this Arabic thing is leading, but this feels like the early 1970's were to the world of teaching Russian. American Universities finally geared up to study an important region, and started producing people with language and related area studies ability. I think this is a valid national security endeavor - it is important to produce people who understand Russia, and the Arabic-speaking world as well." Emily can be contacted by e-mail at esilliman@yahoo.com.
