AUBREY A. CARLSON (Russian and Political Science). ...

PAMELA CARVER (Russian). She recieved an M.A. in Russian Literature from the University of Chicago. She studied in Moscow in summer of 1981 at the Pushkin Institute through a program at American University. She studied in St. Petersburg for the first semester of 1985/86 through CIEE. After finishing her studies, she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the Department of Education's Center for International Education. She then moved to Nashville, Tennessee and got her certification to teach in the public schools. She started a Russian program at Brentwood High School which offered three years of study. The program was phased out after seven years. She then taught Russian I and II at Centennial High School in Franklin, Tennessee. She is currently taking some time off from work to take care of her family. She continues to use her Russian a bit through volunteer work with a group of senior citizens at the Jewish Community Center!
She also returned to St. Petersburg this summer to meet up with a friend with whom she studied in St. Petersburg (Leningrad then) nearly twenty years ago. Of course, the changes were startling. They had a great time and they're coauthoring a book about cultural changes.
She can be contacted at carvergirls@comcast.net.

DELANO R. FREEBERG (Russian and Chemistry). Del relates his adventures since graduation:
I served in the Peace Corps, 1983 to 1985, Togo, West Africa. This was during the Reagan administration, and at the height of the Cold War. One of my friends and fellow teacher at the lycee where I taught was Valerii Tschenko, a Russian professor (I was a physics professor). I imagine it must have seemed strange to the Togolese that an American and a Russian would be friends at that time. Probably it looked even more strange when this Peace Corps volunteer, who had sworn to fight communism, taught one of Valerii's classes po-russki, at his request. So, I did use my B.A. in Russian once: one day during the height of the Cold War, I helped students in Togo to get a chance to study in Leningrad by teaching them the Russian language.
I worked in textile chemistry for two years, moved on to interfacial physical chemistry for two years, and I have been doing purification process design in natural products chemistry for the last 12 years. I started a consulting business in 2001, with a website here: www.apipure.com
I hung up the bicycle cleats in 1993, but since then have climbed 11 of the 14ers in Colorado and some of the more interesting peaks in Banff and Jasper. I am studying the post-revolt period of 1840's Canada and the reforms of Baldwin and LaFontaine. Perhaps Grinnell might think to offer a major in Canadian history?
