KELLY L. ROBBINS (Russian). Right after graduation, I worked for two years as a Russian-English translator and editor for a publishing company in St. Paul that was putting out an English version of Pravda. Then I moved back home to St. Louis and spent the next three years working at Sigma Chemical in international marketing and customer service. In 1992, I moved to the Washington DC area and have been working the past 15 years here at the National Academies (aka the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council). I started out as a program assistant working on an exchange program for US scientists and their counterparts in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Over the years, I have advanced to manage several similar exchange grants programs and to work on other projects (workshops, training programs, and joint studies) involving collaboration with scientists in the region. In addition, I have had the opportunity to translate large sections of joint reports we have prepared with for eign counterparts, which, along with trips to the region on my various projects, has been a good way of keeping up my Russian. In the last two years, I have been assigned the task of creating and managing a new exchange grants program with Pakistan, so unfortunately my time spent on Russian-related activities has been more limited recently--although the new program has allowed me to pick up a bit of Urdu plus an entire wardrobe of outfits suitable for wear in Pakistan (but probably nowhere else!).
