NADIA ABDEL-WAHAB RIES(Russian and French). Aided by a Russian Study Award, Nadia participated in the Fall 1990 Leningrad Semester sponsored by the CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchanges). Returning to her native Germany after this semester in Russia, Nadia worked for a German commercial firm doing business in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Now, with small children, Nadia is taking advantage of her homeland's generous parental-leave support.
She's still in Germany and runs a very small appartment-hotel with her
family. On the side, she is politically and socially active (ex-town
counselor, various initiatives and groups, PTA etc.) She also
freelances for the regional newspaper - sometimes a full-time-job.
She is currently engaged in a telestudies course to strengthen her
translating skills (German - English).

CAROLINE BREARLEY (Russian). Caroline earned the M.A. in Russian studies at Georgetown University. She has been working for USAID since 1997, in the Caucasus, Macedonia and now Bosnia. She is a Foreign Service Officer and she work to foster economic reform in areas such as banking, privatization and trade. She is married to STEVE MEYER ' 93 and they have one daughter.

PEYTON ENGEL (Russian). While doing graduate work in Russian literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Peyton joined Professor Daniel Kaiser in the History Department in co-authoring the article "Time and Age-Awareness" in the Journal of the Society for Comparative Studies in Society and History (Vol. 35, 1993).

PAUL FROESE (Russian). Paul spent the 1992-93 academic year teaching English in the Czech Republic. Paul is an exemplary "seeker of truth," continually reflecting on the questions asked about the human condition by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, andómore recentlyóthe Russian philosopher Vladimir Soloviev. Paul has earned the M.A. in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and he recently wrote from Seattle about studying the philosophy and sociology of religion. Paul keeps us informed of readings that have been helpful to him.

PAUL GARDNER (REES and History). After graduation, Paul worked for Legacy International, an internationally oriented environmental group in Washington, D.C. Paul accompanied a scientific group to Siberia and has worked on an environmental project which focuses on the Russian oil industry.
Paul and his wife Michelle (formerly Borg '90) married in 1992, worked and lived in Washington, DC until they moved to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in 1995. Paul worked for a few nonprofits before attending and completing a Masters of Public Affairs at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. Since 1997, Paul has been the Executive Director of the Recycling Association of Minnesota (RAM). Michelle works at Ecolab, which is an international company that makes soaps, sanitizers, etc. As of October 29, 2004, Paul is a candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives in district 53A (http://www.electpaulgardner.org). While doorknocking, Paul runs into a few Russian speakers and chats it up!

VINCENT KISTE (Russian and History). Vincent spent the 1990-91 academic year as a teacher of English in Kiev, Ukraine. He lived and worked in Russia in the summer of 1992 as a representative of the Iowa Peace Institute. Vincent then earned the M.S. in U.S. foreign policy at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He is now an office manager and international student advisor at the International Communications College in Honolulu.

JESSICA LEONARD (Russian). Jessica earned the M.A. in Russian at Middlebury College. She has worked in Russian for various periods as a representative of C.A.R.E. and the Soros Foundation. Jessica has also served as a staff member of the Fund for Democracy, working with NGOs in Siberia. At the current time, Jessica is living in Almaty, Kazakhstan, working for the field office there of ACTR-ACCELS, an organization that sponsors Russian-American educational exchanges.
