Russian Department Symposium, Fall 2006: Russian Politics and Culture

The Department of Russian at Grinnell will be host a symposium on the interplay and interrelationship of politics and culture in Russia. Co-sponsored by the Center for International Studies and the Rosenfield Program, the symposium will include a wide variety of events during the entire week:

Scholarly Panels Scholars from Russia, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, and the United States will present research on the topic of the symposium.
Keynote Address (Scholar's Convocation):

Man in Black: The Power of Vladimir Putin’s Image
Professor Catharine Nepomnyashchy, Director, Harriman Institute at Columbia University, Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Russian Literature and Chair, Slavic Department, Barnard College

Concert In addition to the academic component of this symposium, accompanying events will include a concert by Russian Bard Timur Shaov, who last spring was on campus as the Russian Department's visiting artist-in-residence, and who worked with the senior seminar during his stay.

Art Exhibit Another aspect of the symposium will an exhibit of works and a presentation by Russian artist Vitaly Komar, one of the highly acclaimed team of Komar and Melamid

Roberts Theatre
October 6 & 7 @ 8 PM; October 8 @ 2 PM

Renowned Russian director and long-time friend of the College Veniamin Smekhov will direct Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita."
