Well-guided planning is important for disciplinary balance, off-campus study and internships. For this reason, the department strongly recommends that students planning to declare a Spanish major consult early on with a Spanish professor to plan their academic program.

Requirements for the Spanish Major (beginning the 2010-2011 academic year)

In addition, they must complete a third seminar in a third area of study offered by the department. 4) With permission of the department, Latin American Studies 111 and/or 4 credits of coursework with content solely on Latin America, Latin@ America or Spain (taken at Grinnell or a Grinnell-approved off-campus study program) may count toward the major. Some courses offered at Grinnell are:

Courses from Off-Campus Programs

Students should meet early with the major and program advisors to discuss and plan for study abroad. Some programs have special requirements and students should go over these carefully at the outset. Students need the College’s approval to study off-campus and to be accepted formally by their preferred program. Some programs are quite competitive and therefore students should have an alternative program option in case their preferred program does not accept them. In selecting a program, keep in mind the following guidelines:

  • A maximum of 12 credits can be applied toward the Spanish major;
  • Courses from off-campus programs cannot fulfill required courses: 343 and Seminars;
  • The Department will accept courses that fit the following descriptions:
    • Spanish Language courses (for example, conversation, composition, stylistics, phonetics, semantics, history of the language, etc.);
    • Literature courses on Latin America, Latin@ America and Spain that do not cover material taught in regularly offered Spanish courses at Grinnell;
    • A maximum of 4 credits of coursework with content solely on Latin America, Latin@ American or Spain.

• Because some off-campus programs offer 2- and 3-credit courses, students may need to take more than 4 courses to earn the number of credits they need for the Spanish major.
