1. Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez (Assitant Professor of Latino/a and Latin American Studies, and Creative Writing in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Iowa) gave a talk entitled, "Confessions of a Border Crosser" and informally visited with students and general public after the talk. (September 2008)
2. Cuban writer Rogelio Saunders (who was a resident at the University of Iowa International Writers Program) visited with Prof. Richter's 295 class and discussed different issues on poetry. Also, he gave a public reading of some of his poems. (October 2008)
3. Concert by Calle Sur at the Spanish Table. (October 2008)
4. Festival Latinoamericano (sponsored by SOL, SGA, Students Affairs, ISO, AAC, and CBS) to celebrate the "Hispanic Heritage Month". (October 2008)
5. Hispanic Film Festival to promote the diversity and richness of the Hispanic culture through selected films from various Latino American countries and Spain: "Diarios de una motocicleta", "La fiesta del Chivo", "El espinazo del Diablo", El sueño de Valentín", "Fresa y chocolate", "Amores perros", "Volver" y "María , llena eres de gracia". (November-December 2008)
6. Ramon Daubon, who served as vice-president for programs at the Inter-American Foundation, has published extensively on Latin America and the connection of economic and social development to democracy. A native of Puerto Rico, he served previously as executive director of the Caribbean Environment and Development Institute, deputy assistant administrator of USAID for its Latin American bureau, a representative of the Ford Foundation for Andean and Southern Cone countries, and vice president of the National Puerto Rican Coalition. He has additional experience with democratic development in South Africa.
