Biological Chemistry SEPC

SEPC? What’s that?

The Biological Chemistry Student Educational Policy Committee (BCM SEPC) acts as a liaison between the student body and the biology, chemistry, and biological chemistry departments. The SEPC functions as the megaphone for the student voice: whatever they say into the megaphone becomes concentrated and amplified.

    Sahil Kumar

Hello everyone! My name is Sahil Kumar (he/him) and I am fourth-year majoring in biochemistry while on the pre-med track. I came to Grinnell as a QuestBridge Scholar from the small town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and am happy to say that during my time here I have made many fond memories. This summer, I stayed in Grinnell where I did a MAP [mentored advanced project] analyzing the experimental and theoretical electric changes that occur within propane and propyne. When I’m not huddled outside Kistle, I like to workout at the BEAR, play/watch basketball, stargaze, and recently have taken an interest in poetry. If you have any questions about the major or anything else, please feel free to shoot me an email. I look forward to serving you in my final year!

    Ashley Pacheco

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley Pacheco (she/her) and I’m a fourth-year pre-med biological chemistry major! I’m originally from Maryland, about 40 minutes outside of Washington D.C. I spent the summer investigating the link between a novel phosphatase family and inflammation at the Huntington Medical Research Institute Immunology Lab (HMRI) in Los Angeles, California. I was also recently published as a co-author for environmental science research I completed while abroad with SFS Australia. On campus, I participate in the Student Organization of Latines, create art for student publications like the Sequence and Grinnell Review, and volunteer for the Food Recovery Network. If you have any questions about any of these areas, feel free to shoot me an email or say hello if you see me on campus! I can't wait to get more connected with everyone and serve you on the Biochemistry SEPC!

    Bailey Sowers

Hi everyone! My name is Bailey Sowers (she/her) and I am a fourth-year biological chemistry and French double major from Iowa (woohoo!) pursuing the pre-medical track. I have previous experience as a CNA, EMT, and medical scribe and would love to help you find your footing as you navigate patient care and clinical experience for graduate school applications. I spent my summer doing cardiovascular surgery on pigs after studying for a semester abroad in Paris, so I am excited to be back as your SEPC this year! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for any questions or concerns about the major.

  • Jane sitting on bench

    Jane March

Hi everyone! My name is Jane (she/her) and I am a fourth-year biological chemistry major from outside of Boston. I declared BCM because I am planning to apply to nursing school within the next year in the hopes of getting more involved in healthcare. When I'm not seen doing organic chemistry research with Professor Sieck, I can be found playing on the soccer team here at Grinnell, reading a good book, or working as a nursing aide at St. Francis Manor (a local nursing home in town). If you have any questions about the BCM major or pre-health life things, please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

    Madeline Fialkov

    Hey everyone!

My name is Madeline Fialkov (she/her), and I am a third-year biological chemistry major on the pre-med track. This summer, I made the arduous trek from my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, to work on a neuroscience MAP here in Grinnell. Apart from science, I like to play guitar, sing, and get overly invested in media. Feel free to reach out to me to ask me about the BCM major and express any concerns you may have. I’m excited to hear from you!

    Eamon Cole

Hi! My name is Eamon Cole, and I’m a third year biological chemistry and German double major from Washington, DC. I love to bike, travel, bake bread, and play music. I’m currently taking piano lessons and I play the violin in the orchestra. On campus I work as a chemistry SCL [science community leader] and I’m doing research characterizing antibiotic resistance in Kruger Park in South Africa. I’m most interested in microbiology and One Health. I’m looking forward to studying abroad in Vienna in the spring!

    Lydia Hong

Hello, everyone! My name is Lydia Hong (she/her), I’m a third-year biochemistry and classics double major. I’m a Summer Health Professions Education Program 2022 scholar and I’ve worked in Professor Lafontant’s research lab studying if lectins can be effective markers for neurovascular development in zebrafish. On campus, I’m also a co-leader of the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students and a moderator at Nerf at Noyce. In my free time, I love to watch bad movies with my friends. Feel free to come and say hi or shoot me an email if you have any questions about the major. I look forward to serving as your SEPC.
