Off-Campus Opportunities in Classics

Students of classics at Grinnell are not confined to the classroom in their encounters with ancient Greece and Rome. As a complement to study at Grinnell, students can choose from a wide variety of semester and summer programs elsewhere in the US and abroad.

Recent destinations include:

Semester-long Programs

College Year in Athens

The College Year in Athens includes intensive academic work in classical Greek studies. Participants take five courses each semester at the Hellenic-American Institute and have access to the museums, libraries, national monuments, and archaeological sites of Athens. Field trips are to the Peloponnesus, northern Greece, the Aegean Islands, and other areas.

Intercollegiate Center in Rome

The Intercollegiate Center in Rome provides undergraduate students with an opportunity in Rome to study ancient history, archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, Italian language, and ancient art.

Trinity College in Rome

Trinity College's Rome Campus offers a broad liberal arts curriculum, opportunities for fieldwork in Rome, a variety of internship opportunities, the city’s lively cosmopolitan culture, and faculty-led academic excursions to Venice, Florence, and Naples/Pompeii/Capri.

Summer Programs

Students can draw financial support from the Lalonde Fellowship in Classical Studies for summer programs, including:

American School of Classical Studies at Athens

The American School offers three-week summer seminars and a six-week intensive program, which integrate material culture and site visits that cannot be replicated anywhere else or by other means. Scholarships are available.

Center for Hellenic Studies Summer Internship in Digital Humanities

For eight weeks in Washington, D.C., students learn and work on various aspects of making ancient sources and resources available for open access.

Greek and Latin Summer Workshops, University of California, Berkeley

Students who have never taken Greek or Latin before can study elementary plus intermediate Greek or Latin intensively over ten weeks in the Bay Area of Northern California. Scholarships are available.

Latin/Greek Institute, City University of New York

For ten intensive weeks in Manhattan, students without previous knowledge of Greek or Latin can study four to six semesters’ worth of either language at the elementary to intermediate stage. Scholarships are available.
