French and Arabic Department

Grinnell’s intensive programs in French and Arabic will give you both the linguistic and cultural competency necessary in today’s global world. Our diverse courses, visiting international artists and scholars, and study-abroad opportunities enable you to explore the complexities of French- and Arabic-speaking countries. The close study of literature, cinema, history, and popular culture also provide you with the skills to pursue careers in fields such as education, business, diplomacy, and the non-profit sector.

Jon Cohen ’14 describes the path he took to his independent major in Middle Eastern studies as a happy accident.

Thomas Neil ’14 got his wish, spending the summer immersed in the Arabic language and Omani history and culture.
