The Ignite Program is for students in grades Pre-K through 6. Ignite is completely free and open to all students who wish to attend. All students are provided with a free t-shirt, lunch, and snack. Students get to be a college student for a day and take fun, educational courses on a variety of subjects that are created and taught by current Grinnell College students. All courses are taught in Grinnell College classrooms.

Saturday, November 19, 2016
Saturday, May 6, 2017
9:45–10 a.m. — Parents will drop off their students at each student’s assigned classroom in buildings around the campus. The course teachers will take attendance in each class that morning. Stay posted for a listing of course locations.
10–11:45 a.m. — Morning session (snack break included)
11:50 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. — Lunch
12:45–2:30 p.m. — Afternoon session
2:30 p.m. — Parents will pick up their children from their second session classrooms, parents may not pick up their children before 2:30 so as not to interrupt the courses.
You will need to fill out the form once for each child you are registering. Courses will be filled with student preferences in mind with a lottery system determining enrollment in the most popular courses. Classes are capped at 15 students and fill quickly. In November, all but one age group filled to capacity and had waitlists. We encourage you to enroll quickly in order to ensure your participation.
Registration for the Ignite Program begins Wednesday, April 12, at 8 a.m. and closes Friday, April 21, at 5 p.m.
What should I bring?
Wear your Ignite t-shirt and bring yourself! You will not need money or any other supplies. We will provide everything your student needs! (Do bring inhalers or any other necessary medical items your student might need.)
What if I don’t live in Grinnell?
Your student is still more than welcome. Ignite is open and free to all students regardless of geography. So if your niece or nephew will be in town visiting that weekend, sign them up!
What if I don’t have the internet to register?
If you do not have access to the internet, please contact Sarah Smith, or Mollie Jo Blahunka, and we will help register you over the phone. (641-269-3900)
What if I missed the registration deadline?
Space is limited in Ignite and because we need accurate numbers for catering, t-shirts, and a myriad of other details related to the programs’ success, we will not be accepting students after the registration deadline has passed. We will add students to waitlists in case an age group is full during the registration period, but not after.
What if my child has a special dietary need?
We do our best to meet the dietary needs of all students. Snacks are usually fruit in the morning and Red Gold pretzels (peanut-free) in the afternoon. We can order vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian lunches for all students. However, if your student has a very specific lunch request or concern, please feel free to pack him/her a separate lunch. Just let their teacher know that morning.
Can someone else pick my child’s t-shirt and other information, if I can’t get there before Saturday morning?
Sure! Just make sure we check off that student’s name as well.
My child is in pre-school and gets nervous when I leave her. Can I stay and help in the room?
While we understand that it can sometimes be scary/intimidating for some of the younger kiddos to be dropped off at a new place with new people, we unfortunately can’t allow parents to stay with their kids during classes. All of the Grinnell College teachers have gone through special training about how to work with minors and we need to make sure that all students are with safe and trained adults. That being said, we encourage parents that are nervous about how their student will do after drop-off to stay near campus (Saint’s Rest is a great waiting spot). Ashley will call you for an early pick-up if things go poorly. Luckily, we usually only have one or two students that struggle at drop-off. Most have a great time!
